Back to the Storage Room and All the Buckets

I don’t know if I mentioned it recently but one of my older daughters has moved back in.  I was really sick of her living in my living room last time so this time I told her that she had to stay in the storage room.  A few weeks ago, there wasn’t any room to even get in the doorway of the storage room.

We’ve been spending at least an hour a day most days of the week for the last few weeks going through buckets of stuff.  My living room is a complete disaster and you can’t even tell that we’ve made a dent.  I’ve gotten rid of 13 black garbage bags full and the storage room still looks like this:

YIKES!!!! These are the days that I ask myself.. what the heck is wrong with me? I’d say that we’re about a third of the way done but that’s it.  It’s probably going to take at least a few more months to finish it but we need to move faster because the wall on the left may have been affected by the leaking roof.

Four Buckets Getting Put Back

I’ve been working on this all morning.  My daughter slept and then woke up and was going to leave.  She’s a bigger problem than the mess because it doesn’t bother her at all.  I did manage to tell her that she couldn’t leave until she put a few buckets that have been gone through at least twice each back up there.  We had to rearrange a few things to get them in there but thankfully they’re out of my living room again.

I can only do so much before I get too overwhelmed.  It’s hard getting rid of these things.  Like Dave Ramsey says about saving money, if it doesn’t hurt at all, then you’re not doing enough. I’m definitely doing a lot but there’s still room for improvement.  It’s such a struggle with myself.  Keep it, get rid of it, keep it, get rid of it. It seems like there’s no end.

One of my other daughters just came downstairs.  There was one of her old show shirts sitting here that I was planning on keeping.  I asked her if she wanted it and surprisingly, she said no.  It will go in the get rid of pile.  I’m finding that the kids are much less attached to this stuff than I am so if they say to get rid of something, out it goes. It helps me when I get stuck.

  • Hi Jen the Hidden Hoarder! I’m Melinda the PurpleSlob. I think we might be related!
I came here from MinimalistSometimes, when I saw you joined Anne’s challenge too.
    Great job!! Any amount counts!
    We can do this!!

    • Aww thanks! I can’t see anything in there but it’s actually the only room that has a faint musty smell. That’s why I’m worried that it might be in that wall. It’s right above the really bad basement stairs.

  • there is nothing wrong with you. Since you have been annoyed by the stuff at home and constantly getting rid of stuff, I must say there are many things right with you. I tend to hoard myself. Luckily I have little storage in my home and, like yourself, I am fed up with the things lying around and I longed for a simplier life,, so I started decluttering myself last year. It has been going well, though as you also mentioned, letting go off things that remind me people or places I visit is hard. One last challenge, I guess. all the best

    • Thanks!! It’s definitely a challenge!! I’m trying to look at it as a journey to being freed from this stuff. That’s why I like taking pics so much. It really helps me to see the progress. Although now I’m starting to feel the difference too when it only takes an hour or two to clean up a room instead of a whole week!!
