I Need Some Opinions

Even if you know nothing about horses or horse trailers, could you please offer an opinion or suggestions on places to post a horse trailer for sale?

Here’s the situation. I’ve been trying to sell my old horse trailer for close to six months. In all that time, I’ve gotten 3 emails, none of which panned out.  I’ve had it listed on Craigslist and various Facebook groups, including the marketplace. I had a friend put it on a Farm Buys website.  I think that’s it.

I NEED to sell this trailer. It’s nice. It has new tires, a huge tack room and there’s hardly any rust. My new trailer that I paid quite a bit more for than what I’m asking for this one has a lot more rust.

So, is it the Price ($2,700), Condition (not bad), Color (pink), or some other reason that people aren’t interested?  I don’t get it. I thought if I was patient, a buyer would come along eventually but it’s just not happening.

One of my friends is insisting it’s the pink and she’s offered to help me paint it. Do you think that could be all it is?  Should I take her up on the offer?

  • Lauren is right, the feed stores where others go for their feed will see it. Also believe it or not, also put some pictures/ad on the bulletin board of your local vet/s if they will allow it. If it doesn’t sell soon, I would paint it. Most people are lazy these days and will pass it up rather than put more work painting it. Pink is going to be hard to move, unless you find someone of the female persuasion in 4-H or a school program looking for one. It looks to be an older classic that some people would want. Retro is still in.

    • Lol… I hope retro is still in! It’s a 1997 but I know people think of 70’s and 80’s when they see this style. I’ll try posting it in some of the places that people here have suggested for another couple of weeks but if it doesn’t sell, then I think I’m going to have to paint it. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I would suggest giving out flyers within the 4-h community and putting up flyers in tack and feed stores like TSC or any local stores you have. Cleaning it up really well and taking lots of pictures of the tack room, etc will help. We had a trailer somewhat similar but it had just a box for tack underneath the manger. My mom thinks we had $2,500 into it when she sold it and basically everything in it was re-done. New tires, new lights, etc. I would try the free and easy fixes first before trying to paint it.

    • Good ideas!!! I’m glad to hear that my price isn’t too far out of range. I would gladly take $2,500 if someone would make me an offer but I can’t even get anyone to come look at it. I figure people will make an offer so I don’t want to start it too low. I spent almost $500 on new tires last summer and then maybe hauled with it once or twice after I got them. I’ll try some of your ideas!

    • That’s a good idea. I keep my horse at a small private place so I didn’t think to post it at a bigger place with more horse people traffic.
