Finally Some Real Progress on the Front Porch

It’s only taken me months to do it but I have finally made a dent on my awful front porch.  It would be great if I could proudly say that I got rid of so much that what’s left on the porch is all that’s left.  But it’s not.  I have a few buckets of stuff in my living room still.  Some of it is to get rid of but I haven’t had a chance to go through them yet.  When I open my front door now, it makes me smile.  It’s so nice.  Thoughts of what I can do to decorate are already popping into my head.

I can’t remember everything that I got rid of but I’m going to add some to my count:

  • 10 DVDs
  • Big tiger rug (this is an awesome rug but we had it in the horse trailer and it smells like horse now)
  • Pair of boots
  • 3-D puzzle
  • 15 pieces of mail
  • 2 Rags
  • Shoe Lace
  • Clothespin
  • Pair of shoes
  • End Table
  • Empty Box
  • Face stuff for the horse

Total front porch decluttering count for today:  36

I’m pretty sure there were quite a few more things but I can’t remember what they were.  I wasn’t really worried about counting as I was getting rid of stuff.  I was just tossing away as fast as I could.   After I filled up the garbage can, I thought, oh yea, I should’ve been counting.

Grand decluttering total: 2,276

A Very Organized Kind of Hoarding

kitchen1 Today I want to talk about my recent visit to see family in Tennessee.  After this visit, I’m completely convinced that hoarding does indeed run in families.  I’ve read that there’s different levels of hoarding but there’s definitely different kinds of hoarding too.

The hoard in my house is a combination of too much stuff combined with a lack of organization, or lack of storage space – not sure which would be a more accurate description – maybe both.  The more things I get rid of, the easier it is to organize the remaining things but my organizational skills are minimal.  But things were the complete opposite here.

Lots and lots of things but everything has a proper place.  There’s definitely a lot of hoarding going on but it’s VERY organized.  They have way more of everything than two people could possibly need and most of it is used frequently or is useful in some way.

You never need to run to the store because you can’t find something, it will always be in it’s place.  I’m just not this organized.  The amount of stuff was a little overwhelming to me but it didn’t take long to get used to it.  The house is very clean, there’s just a lot of stuff, and I am used to that.

The Very Organized Kitchen

There is way too much food.  Way too many storage containers.  A million cooking utensils.

How many cooking utensils can one house have?  I have enough to fill up two drawers so maybe I have just as many but it doesn’t seem like it because they aren’t out on my counter.  They are put away in the drawers. Maybe it’s easier to put them away when you’re done using them if they’re out on the counter.  Or maybe they just ran out of drawer space.

too many cooking utensils

Storage containers apparently come in every shape and size imaginable.  There’s not a drawer of them, there’s 4 full drawers of them, each one very neatly stacked with about a hundred little containers.  The refrigerator is packed full in a very organized manner too.  Everything has a place and if you put something in the wrong place when putting it away, everything ends up a mess.  You put it right back where you got it from and then everything stays organized.

organized hoarding

And then there’s the pantry.  Two people live here but you would think there’s at least 6 or more by how much food is in the house.  They frequently feed the entire neighborhood which is good because there’s no possible way that two people could eat this much food in a year, maybe even two years.

full kitchen pantry

How Much Food is Too Much?

If you want to eat something in particular, they have it.  They probably have at least 10 of them but the problem is that they can’t eat it all.  You can pick something up and find that the expiration date was years ago.  They’ll still eat it.  I just can’t do it.  Maybe a few months past the date if it’s a dry item but years?  No thanks.  Sometimes you’re lucky and you’ll find something new because they never stop shopping but so much of it goes bad.

food pantry

full pantry

I’m not sure why they need hundreds of cans of soup or 40 boxes of crackers.  They have two full pantries.  The main one has a big refrigerator and a big upright freezer.  The other one is full of chips and snacks.  Even lots of candy!

It’s Not Just the Kitchen

I’ve talked a lot about the kitchen but that’s not the only place in the house where you can find anything.  It’s just the most fascinating.  How they can organize this much stuff is way beyond me!  So let’s move on to another room in the house.  The Man Cave.

The Man Cave is full of collectible cars and things like that.  It’s a bad case of collectible hoarding but you can still get in the room because once again, the organization is phenomenal.

collectible hoarding

collectible car hoarding

Most of the other rooms are the same way.  Every closet in the house is neatly packed.  All the shelves are being fully utilized and if there’s an empty space, it won’t be for long! I don’t have enough time or energy to organize like this.  It’s great they can do it but it’s not for me.  I’d rather keep getting rid of things until there’s a manageable amount of things in my house that’s just right for me.

Is your mess organized?  Are you a collectible hoarder?

Cleaning Out the Old Horse Trailer

We finally had some beautiful weather the other day and I was able to clean my horse trailer out.  It had to get done because I bought a different one and I need to sell the old one as soon as possible.  My truck isn’t big enough to haul a horse trailer and it’s on it’s last legs.  Once I sell the trailer, I’ll be able to buy a different truck.  We managed to fill up 3 big bags of things to sell at the Midwest Horse Fair next week.

Time for the pics!

cleaning the tack room

It doesn’t really look like that much stuff, does it?  It’s hard to see it all in the picture though. You’ll see it much better when it’s out on the driveway!

Cleaning it out!

cleaning out the trailer

There was a lot more in there than you thought, right?  I loved that trailer because of all the space it had in the tack room but unfortunately it just wasn’t big enough for my horse.  I’m glad that we found a lot to get rid of.  Still not sure how it all fit.

Here’s the emptied out horse trailer!

clean horse trailer

See, it has tons of space for a lot of stuff.  You just need to have small horses that fit in the horse area.  Just kidding.  They don’t really have to be small.  My horse has an usually long neck so that’s why it’s too small for him.  The new trailer only has about half the amount of space that this one does so we had to get rid of some of the stuff.  We also put some of it in the tack stall at the barn but that needs to be cleaned out too.

The tack stall at the barn and my front porch are the other two places where I keep too much horse stuff.  I’ll have to get through those two places before the horse fair.  I don’t have much time left!

Finally taking down the Christmas Tree

Yes, it’s February and my tree is still up.  The last two years there was so much clutter that I took the tree down as soon as possible after Christmas.  There wasn’t room for it.  This year, the tree was in a new spot for the first time since I bought the house 18 years ago.  I love the new spot!  It looks great in the less crowded room and the lights brighten everything up.  The ornaments are adorable.  I’ve really enjoyed having it up.

This year, I actually went through the things in my Christmas buckets and actually got rid of a few things.  I don’t have a lot so even though it wasn’t many things, it was still a good portion of what I have.  A few years ago, I had a lot of Christmas stuff.  It was hard hauling the buckets up and down the stairs because they were so heavy.  Then, with all the clutter around, it was hard to find places to put things so I would have to pack away other stuff.  So, I just got rid of a lot of it and kept my favorite things.

Here’s the things I’m getting rid of this year:

  • Salt and pepper shakers on a sleigh
  • Halloween decoration that ended up in the bucket
  • Goose candle
  • Cookie cutter ornament
  • Gift card holder (I could keep this and use it but it smells really funny inside)
  • Broken ornament
  • Dancing Santa with a broken arm.  The kids loved this but it’s time for him to go.
  • Tree skirt.  It’s just really dirty but I don’t think it’s washable.
  • Dove?
  • 3-D glasses
  • And last but not least, a broken ceramic Santa.  This one I’m still debating about.  It’s broken I know.  But my mom painted it when she was younger and I’ve always loved this since I was a little kid.  One of my kids broke it a few years ago.  I might have all the pieces so I could glue it back together.  I might have to leave him in the bucket for another year.

Hard to Track Progress in the Kitchen

Things in the kitchen aren’t really good things to take pics of.  Most of the things to get rid of belong in the garbage rather than a donation box.  I keep throwing things away before I remember to save them for the pic.  Unfortunately, it’s probably going to throw my count off but I’ll keep trying to keep it as accurate as possible.  I also haven’t really been able to count days either.  It’s just been weird in the kitchen so far but maybe it’s because I’m doing as much cleaning as decluttering.

Here’s the little list:

  • 3 packs of cat treats
  • A moose hat from Moose Jaw pizza place
  • Plastic spoon
  • Flosser
  • Coupon
  • Opened frosting pack
  • Empty container
  • Firecrackers
  • Cat boots (my daughter had to get these for one of our cats and of course she won’t wear them!)
  • Top of a toothpick holder
  • Cold medicine
  • 4 egg cartons
  • Hot chocolate packet that expired in 2014
  • Can of half eaten frosting
  • Potato
  • A really nice Tupperware mini chopper

21 Things… slow and steady will win the race in this room

Kitchen Decluttering Total = 95 Things

Is getting things a blessing or a curse?

Every time I get rid of things, they’re almost immediately replaced by a well meaning person.  I always wonder if I’m blessed for giving things away or if I’m cursed and I’ll always have a hoard of stuff at my house.

It’s been less than a week since I donated all those bags of clothes and today, someone brought a great big giant box of clothes for me.  Thankfully, a lot of them are too small or not my style so it’ll be easy to get rid of them but some are going to make it to my room.  I’m thankful yet a little stressed.

Am I blessed or cursed?

Starting on Some Mind Blowing Kitchen Decluttering

It’s been hard starting on the kitchen.  Every room has been hard to start on.  It’s so overwhelming for those first few days.  I’m taking it really slowly with the kitchen though and it didn’t help that I kept procrastinating all week long.  Finally, I decided to start with one cabinet shelf a day.  It seemed to be all I could handle this week but it was something.  I have a little more time today but need to do some actual cleaning in there first.  Groceries need to be put away and dishes are waiting to be washed.

Once I finally got started, this is what I took out of the middle shelf of the first cabinet:

  • Half used pack of taco seasoning
  • Pack of Ramen Noodle soup beef flavoring
  • Random spice
  • Tupperware pepper shaker
  • Empty jar of peanut butter (Why?)
  • Caramel syrup
  • Chili seasoning
  • Organic honey that has gotten very dark but not crystalized
  • Crystalized honey
  • Mucus Relief Cough medicine
  • Pork seasoning and coating mix
  • Caramel hot cocoa
  • Another half used pack of taco seasoning
  • Seasoned Salt Sample pack

14 things.. that’s not very many… better luck on the next one

Here’s what I got out of the bottom shelf: (for some strange reason, I took the pic and then threw it all away so I don’t remember exactly what it all is)

  • 2 Boxes of Vitamins that expired in 2009!?!?
  • 2 Crystalized little bears of honey
  • 3 bottles of expired vitamins
  • Almost empty container of colored sugar
  • 8 bottles of old spices
  • 3 bottles of expired medications
  • Bottom half of a butter dish

20 things from the bottom shelf

I really thought that there would be a lot more than that to get rid of.  Since I want this to be a major decluttering effort, I might go through it again right away.

Here’s the last shelf:

  • 32 bottles of expired medications (now that’s a little better)
  • Vinegar
  • Big Bear of Honey (I’ve heard that you can uncrystalize pure honey but I tried once and it seemed to take forever.  I’ve also heard that it lasts for like hundreds of years but would you really want to eat it after hundreds of years?)
  • Almost empty container of Kool-Aid (I know it’s terrible but I love Kool-Aid once in awhile)
  • Bag of walnuts that I was going to use for Christmas cookies a few years ago.
  • Great big bottle of Acetyl L-Carnitine that I was given for my thyroid but never got around to taking.
  • Top of the butter dish
  • Tupperware shaker container that’s missing the bottom
  • Tupperware salt shaker

40 Things from the top shelf! Now we’re getting somewhere!

That’s a total of 74 things out of the first kitchen cabinet, done over 3 days.

I have a feeling that I’m going to be able to top the 500 things I got out of the bedroom on this room.  Every cabinet is bursting at the seams.  I feel like I need to go deep on this decluttering because I want to be able to cook more without having to move a million things every day before starting.  Plus, people are always filling up this room!

Kitchen Total = 74 Things

(I’m not posting a lot of pics right now because it’s just so bad in the room.  I love posting before pics but not until I’m pretty much done.)

Day 11 of Bedroom Decluttering and Finally Done

I was going to keep working on my bedroom until I had 14 good days of decluttering finished.  But I decided that I’m done after day 11.  I’ve gotten rid of well over 500 things and I spent some time dusting and vacuuming in there today.  Next time I have a little money, I would like to find a new comforter but the one I have now works just fine.

My dresser and closet are both still too full and could use another round of decluttering but I’m ready to move on to the kitchen.  I did manage to find one more pile of stuff to get rid of today.  Here’s the final bedroom list:

  • Holey jeans
  • Eastery shirt
  • Swim shorts
  • Pair of sandals
  • 3 single sandals
  • Pack of Rev-a-locks (these are locks that go inside cabinets and then you use a magnet on the outside to unlock the cabinet)
  • Cucumber lotion (I hate the smell of cucumber lotions so I don’t know why I had so many)
  • Homemade hacky sack (you can make them with sand and balloons)
  • Tealight candle
  • Some blue plastic thing (I have no idea what in the world this is)
  • Feather duster (I tried dusting with it but ended up putting more dust in the room so I guess that means it’s time to get rid of it)
  • Light Control module
  • Snowflake pillow case
  • Camping themed pillow case
  • Shirt
  • Khaki pants
  • Jeans
  • Sweatshirt
  • Light jeans
  • Feather duster
  • Howdy Doody Hallmark ornament
  • Scarlett from Gone with the Wind Hallmark ornament
  • Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind Hallmark ornament
  • Basketball playing mouse Hallmark ornament
  • Brother puppy Hallmark ornament
  • Monkey with a banana Hallmark ornament
  • 2013 Somebunny new to love at Christmas Hallmark ornament
  • Soccer playing seal Hallmark ornament
  • Three Wishes Hallmark ornament
  • Teddy bear in a shoe Hallmark ornament
  • Another Hallmark ornament
  • A vacuum cleaner canister full of dust (Ok, I can’t really count this one but there was so much dust in there that you would think I put it in there on purpose!!)

That’s a total of 33 things today!

bedroom decluttering day 11

Final Bedroom Decluttering Total after 11 Days = 542 things

I still have all of the bags that are ready to go.  I’m going to pile them up in a little bit, take some pics, and then take them somewhere to donate them.  I wanted to do it this way so that I could see the actual amount of space that I’m freeing up by getting rid of all these things.  I’ll post them as soon as I get a chance.

Grand decluttering total for the whole house = 2,029 things that I never have to pick up again!  Yay!! I have finally gotten over 2,000!!

Day 10 of Bedroom Decluttering. Was it enough?

I think this is day 10 of decluttering my bedroom.  I’m getting very close to 500 things that I’ve let go.  I was hoping to get to at least 500 by this weekend so we’ll see in a little bit.  Last night, as I was working on it, I looked around and thought… I could start over right now and find another 500 things to get rid of.  It’s certainly much better than when I started but I can’t believe how much is still in there.  I’m pretty sure that I could fill up almost my whole truck right now with all of the bags and boxes ready to be donated.

Here’s the list for the weekend. Is it enough to get to 500?

  • Blue velour pajamas
  • Brown pants
  • Pajama top
  • Red fleece shirt
  • Green shorts
  • Pajama pants
  • Pink top
  • Black top
  • Hippie top

  • 6 single socks (can’t forget those!)
  • Messed up tie
  • Sheet music
  • The other shoe that I found in the beginning
  • 3 Ninjas VHS tape
  • Leather Blackberry holder
  • Blue lantern (that I think I might keep..yea take this off the list)

Total Bedroom Decluttering After Day 10 = 509 Things!!!

bedroom decluttering

bedroom decluttering day 10

bedroom decluttering day 10

I’m so so so excited!  I actually did it!  I made it to 500 things in 10 days of decluttering!

Unfortunately, I just missed my other goal of getting to 2,000 things in the whole house. But I’m really close…

Grand Decluttering Total = 1,996 Things that I never have to pick up again!!

I think that I might have to find 4 more things in my bedroom to get rid of before I go to bed tonight.  Or maybe I’ll go to 14 days of decluttering in that room.  That would probably make the most sense.

I haven’t really decided what area I’m doing next so this will give me a few more days to think about it.  This week was looking a little less busy but that’s all changed.  It’s another busy week with things going on almost every night.

So Many Shoes So Little Time On Day 9

The lack of time to work on my bedroom is only half lack of time.  The other half is procrastination and reluctance.  I really want my bedroom decluttered but I don’t want to do it.  I have so many other things that I need to get done this week but I did push through yesterday and got rid of another bag of stuff.

  • 8 Pairs of Shoes (Yay!!)
  • 6 Single Shoes (Something has to go with those single socks!)
  • Heart shaped wicker basket (it’s hiding in the basket of shoes)
  • Flat Sheet
  • A Clock (Never taken out of the box)
  • Refrigerator shelf

18 things to add to the count!  These were all bigger things so they took up a lot of space.  It cleared up a lot of room in the closet getting rid of them.  It was much easier putting everything back in.

Total After Day 9 = 457

I would still like to get to at least 500 things by next Saturday.  I’m sure I can do it but the rest of today is pretty booked up.  The next two days are completely full so maybe Wednesday I’ll have a little time.   Not sure if I’ll have much time Saturday either.

Grand Decluttering Total = 1,944 things that I will never have to pick up again.
