Day 10 of Bedroom Decluttering. Was it enough?

I think this is day 10 of decluttering my bedroom.  I’m getting very close to 500 things that I’ve let go.  I was hoping to get to at least 500 by this weekend so we’ll see in a little bit.  Last night, as I was working on it, I looked around and thought… I could start over right now and find another 500 things to get rid of.  It’s certainly much better than when I started but I can’t believe how much is still in there.  I’m pretty sure that I could fill up almost my whole truck right now with all of the bags and boxes ready to be donated.

Here’s the list for the weekend. Is it enough to get to 500?

  • Blue velour pajamas
  • Brown pants
  • Pajama top
  • Red fleece shirt
  • Green shorts
  • Pajama pants
  • Pink top
  • Black top
  • Hippie top

Total Bedroom Decluttering After Day 10 = 509 Things!!!

bedroom decluttering day 10

I’m so so so excited!  I actually did it!  I made it to 500 things in 10 days of decluttering!

Unfortunately, I just missed my other goal of getting to 2,000 things in the whole house. But I’m really close…

Grand Decluttering Total = 1,996 Things that I never have to pick up again!!

I think that I might have to find 4 more things in my bedroom to get rid of before I go to bed tonight.  Or maybe I’ll go to 14 days of decluttering in that room.  That would probably make the most sense.

I haven’t really decided what area I’m doing next so this will give me a few more days to think about it.  This week was looking a little less busy but that’s all changed.  It’s another busy week with things going on almost every night.

Those Pesky Places that Fill Up with Clutter

I keep talking about three areas that I need to work on but I’m waiting until after Christmas.  One of those spots couldn’t wait because I want it cleaned up a little bit before I put the tree up this weekend.  I decided that I could work on it a little bit at a time.  I wasn’t going to just because it always seems I make more of a mess when I’m trying to clean up.

The Shoes

The area that I decided I could start on is the shoe holder by the door.  There’s still a lot of summer sandals in there and it’s freezing outside.  So, the sandals can all be put in the bedrooms now.  We aren’t going to wear most of these shoes until at least April or May again so it’s okay if they’re packed away.

shoe area

I don’t know why there’s so many shoes!  We don’t have THAT many people here!

The Bathroom Closet

On to the next area.  The bathroom closet.  I haven’t gone in there in a long time because well, frankly, I just can’t get in there.  It’s a tall skinny closet that doesn’t function very good.  It’s hard to get things in and out of it but we need it as a place to put things.  It doesn’t take more than a couple hours to clean it out but I won’t have a couple hours for a few more weeks.  Until then, it will just drive me crazy.

The Kitchen Mess

So, the closet is the second place that needs a lot of work but neither one of those two places need as much work as one area of my kitchen.  This is one of those embarrassing places.  I feel like it looks worse in the pictures than in real life but unfortunately, I think I can just see it in the pictures.  I’m so used to looking at it that I don’t see it anymore.  This is an area that will probably take me an entire week to finish.  Some of it will get done before Christmas but most of it will have to wait.

kitchen clutter

What a disaster!  That wine rack has turned into a stuff everything into it kind of place.  As you can see, not much wine but tons of other stuff.  The top of the microwave is packed, as is the counter.  This stuff seems to be all the stuff that doesn’t have any place else to go.  I’ll really need to work on finding some organization for these things.  I have a few ideas but no time right now to think about them.

These areas will be the first ones to get worked on in the new year.  Actually, I will have the shoes done by the end of the weekend.  I have the basket of hats and mittens on top that will probably have to wait but that’s okay.  They aren’t causing a scene or anything yet.  They’re over the top of the basket right now but just a little bit.  I want to catch it before it explodes all over the entire shoe holder but I don’t feel like it’s too that point yet and I’ll get to it before it does.

Less Clutter = More Fun!

Today was one of those days where I didn’t want to leave the house because I’m right in the middle of a drastic decluttering and I really wanted to finish it today.  I’m busy for the next week and a half so this was my last chance to get some things done.

But we had a few events going on and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to miss them.  One was an award banquet for my daughter and the other one was going to a national show horse barn to see a demonstration about different riding disciplines.

I decided that we needed to have fun and not let the hoard hold us prisoners!  I think I made the right decision.

We got to see this:

and this:

The demonstration was awesome but then afterwards, we were able to go walk around the barn and got to see one of them training a few of the horses.  It was fabulous.  They have a huge indoor round pen where they do the training which is great.  He said that they even train the horses to drive in that round arena. I wish that I had one of those for working with my mini horse!

After we left that barn, we went to our barn and helped clean and got the horses in for the night.  We couldn’t take our horses out though because there was ice everywhere.  It would have been too dangerous trying to walk them to the arena so we just got to say hi to them and that’s it.  After watching that demonstration, we really wanted to work with our horses a little bit.

We got home late but I was able to do quite a bit.  My son did a lot by himself before I got home so he is officially moved into the other bedroom now.  The smaller room is now the new storage room and it’s about half way full.  I still have one more room full of stuff that needs to go in there and then we’ll be able to move pretty freely through the whole house, all except for that room, the basement and the garage but it will be awhile before I get to those.

Decluttering the Storage Room

I spent the weekend working on decluttering the “storage room” in my house.  It’s not really a storage room, that’s just what we call it because when a holiday comes along, we shove all of the clutter in there.  It’s actually the biggest bedroom upstairs and I want to kick myself every time I think about this cluttered room.  Organized storage would be much better.

My 6’1″ son is sleeping in a twin size bed right now.  It’s too small for him but the room he’s in is too small for a bigger bed.  If I could get the “storage room” cleaned out, I could move him into that room and then get him a bigger bed.  I can’t get through it all fast enough.  I’m struggling.  I could only get through so much before I had to give it up for the weekend.  I was doing too much standing there and not enough getting rid of.

I have 4 big buckets of stuff ready to get rid of (I made a little progress).  I’m kind of waiting until I have a few more because it gives me that sense of accomplishment when I see it all together as one big pile.  I also like the feeling of seeing no room to walk around and then when it’s gone, empty space.  That’s a great feeling too!

We might have some friends coming over on Saturday night.  I’m a little worried about it and I still might have to cancel.  The kids are looking forward to it so they’ve been helping all weekend but it might not be enough.  I will be really sad if I have to cancel this because we have too much of a mess here.  It’s a pretty common thing to happen here though.  There’s a lot of times that we can’t have people over.  It’s one of the biggest reasons that I want this house cleaned out.

Free Day Reward?

not hoarding cookbooks

I’ve been getting rid of things by putting them out on a table in front of my house with a big FREE sign.  I’ve gotten rid of a lot of stuff so far and I’m hoping to do it again this weekend.  Last weekend, I wasn’t even planning on having a free table but I started working on an area and had so much stuff that we set it up.  A few hours later, almost everything was gone.  It was my biggest and most successful free day yet!

Dinner at my house has been getting a bit routine.  We’ve been making the same things over and over for a few months now.  I was thinking that I really needed some new cookbooks but certainly couldn’t afford any new ones right now.  Besides, even if I could afford them, I still probably wouldn’t buy myself new cookbooks when there’s so many perfectly good used ones out there.

The night after my biggest and most successful free day, I was at a 4-H volunteer banquet.  Everyone got some raffle tickets.  We played a trivia game and the tables that got the trivia questions right won extra tickets.  My table didn’t win any extras.  There were different bags for different things that you could put your tickets in and one was a cookbook basket.  Some of the other things were a Keurig coffee maker, a Starbucks basket with coffee, some scissors, and a car wash basket.  I put a few of my tickets in the cookbook basket and a few in the other bags.  Surprisingly, I won the cookbook basket!

The cookbooks were all brand new Taste of Home cookbooks.  My favorite ones!!! And let me tell you, a brand new cookbook has a different feel to it than a used one!  It feels great!

The books included one for Christmas, one called Church Suppers, one with Best Loved Healthy recipes, and a diabetes family friendly cookbook.  The fifth book wasn’t a cookbook at all but a book that made me think that maybe these books were my reward for having these free days.  The title of the book is The Kindness Diaries.  I thought that was pretty cool!

Not Much Progress This Week

I’m stuck at a very frustrating point right now.  Nothing seems to be going the way that I would like and I’m feeling the Christmas time crunch already.  It’s less than two months away and you can barely walk through the house.  Work and 4-H have been taking up way too much of my time so progress has been very slow.  Here’s where I’m at:

  • The weather is getting cold so I  need to finish up my front porch.  It’s a small enclosed porch and tends to become the catch-all place for everything going in and out of the house.  It’s also where I keep all of my horse things.  I can envision this porch being decorated really cute with old horse bits and other antique country gear or horse tack IF I ever get it cleaned out.
  • My living room has turned into a bedroom which is pretty much turning all of my plans upside down.  Right when I was in the middle of making huge progress, my daughter broke up with her boyfriend and is here all the time now.  This is the daughter who thinks she has fairies following behind her who clean up after her.  She hasn’t quite figured out that those fairies are other family members and she doesn’t understand why we are always yelling at her.  According to her, she doesn’t make a mess!  Ugh!!!  Anyways, this is putting even more of a strain on my time shortage because every time I have a few minutes to work in here, I have to start by moving all of her stuff and then I either run out of time for working on what needs to get done or I’m too tired to keep working on it.
  • Decluttering has actually been going okay.  I’ve made some tough decisions and taken a few trips to St. Vincent de Paul.  Yesterday, I tackled an area that had a lot of stuff that was meant to be donated but had never made it out of the house.  I was going to load it into the car to take it to St. Vinny’s but one of my other daughters has really started enjoying the free table idea and so she wanted to set it up.  We put a lot of things out there, including a great big box of clothes.  I didn’t take a picture this time.  I just set it up and left for a few hours.  I couldn’t believe it.  When I got home, there was hardly anything left!! The great big box and everything in it was gone!  I had put a really neat lamp out, decorative candle holders, an M&M collectible guy and some toys and they were all gone!! Awesome!!  It was so much fun to come home to those empty tables because I know it was nice stuff and made some people happy!

Well, I see a lot of sun outside so I think I’m going to go work on my front porch!  Maybe I’ll finally make some progress on it today.

ProsperityandCalamities put this quote in a comment on one of my posts and I think of it every time I work on my porch.  It keeps me motivated!

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” – William Morris

My front porch is far from beautiful right now so this quote is perfect for this area!!   If I make enough progress on the porch, I’ll post a pic later today.

Tough Decisions – Vintage 3M Games Oh-Wah-Ree and Facts in Five

Vintage games

I’m having a hard time letting go of a few things.  These two games are on the top of my list right now.  My head is saying to get rid of them.  I don’t need them.  I have no reason to be attached to them.  I picked them up about a month ago at a rummage sale.  It was a bag sale and my mom pointed them out.  They were marked $8.00 each but I fit them both in a bag along with a bunch of other stuff for $5.00.  I had never even heard of these games before I picked them up that day,  I put them on eBay last week and didn’t get any bids on them.

My heart on the other hand is saying hey, these are cool vintage games.  They’re both from the 1960’s and they look awesome.  We could really use some games around here that aren’t electronic and these are pretty neat.  It looks like all of the parts are here and they’re still in good condition.  They look fun!  Oh-Wah-Ree has a leather pouch of brightly colored marbles and a leather pouch of stones.

They are both the size of big books.  In fact, they are called Bookshelf games because you can put them on your book shelf along with the big encyclopedias that you probably don’t have anymore.  They are so big though that I would really like to get rid of them.  I have them sitting next to my TV right now and they’re driving me crazy.  I want that spot cleared off.  I could move them but do I really want to take up that much room somewhere else either?  I don’t think so.

Does anyone know anything about these antique games?  Should I feel bad getting rid of them or should I be keeping them?  What would you do with them?

The Giant Mound of Clutter

lots of clutterI am going crazy with this giant mound of clutter today.  I need some clutter coaching!  I have a great friend who will text me all day if that’s what it takes to get through a pile of stuff like this.  It’s hard for me to let go of it and a lot of this stuff has already been gone through  a couple of times which is what makes it extra hard.  There’s so much that needs to be done and so little time!  I keep telling myself that there will be plenty of time once I’m not taking care of all this clutter.

Clutter demands a lot of taking care of.  I can’t go work with my horses today because it is holding me here.  It wants to be moved from place to place.  It wants to be dusted.  It wants to taunt me until I want to scream from the hold it has on me.

Ok, that’s a little melodramatic but it’s been a rough couple of weeks trying to deal with it.  I could hardly get to my computer so wasn’t on very often because it was almost buried under the mountains.  I have finally dug it back out today and will hopefully get caught back up on computer stuff now.

I’m planning on doing another free table tomorrow if the weather cooperates and I get enough stuff together.  I don’t have to do anything else today except work on this mountain but haven’t gotten very far yet and it’s almost noon.  I need to be in the right mindset of “get rid of it” but I’m only half way there.

The Critter In the Mess

This is one of my most embarrassing hoarder moments.  I don’t think I’ve ever even told anyone this story about the critter.  When my kids were little, my computer was in the living room and I would sit on there for a little while every night and chat with other moms on Babycenter while the kids played.  My twins were babies and I was working full time so I was very sleep deprived and the room was overtaken with stuff.

For a couple months, as I sat at my computer, out of the corner of my eye, I would see a big fluffy thing go flying past my feet.  I never saw a furry critter so I thought that I was so sleep deprived that I must be seeing things.  We didn’t have any pets at the time. It would have to be something bigger than a mouse to have a big fluffy tail like that but then surely I would have seen an animal that big.  I’m sure that I would have known if there was a critter living in the house, even if there was stuff every where.

I saw this fluffy thing that I thought was a tail at least 5 times but I never heard anything.  I thought that if it was an animal and it was living in the piles of stuff, I would hear it rustling through the room or there would be some other clue but I never saw or heard anything.

This went on for a few months until one day I finally saw it.  I walked in the kitchen and there it was.  The critter – a chipmunk.  There was a chipmunk in my kitchen, on the counter, having lunch.  I still can’t believe it!  It wasn’t very small either.  Now that’s when you know you have a hoarding problem!

Imagine finding a critter like this one on your counter.
