I am doing a pretty good job in the basement if I do say so myself. If feels great getting rid of all of this stuff!
You know I’m serious when I get rid of something from The Milwaukee Wave. I have so many good memories of watching the soccer games with my kids and hanging out for awhile after them. Those were some of the greatest years we ever had. We had so much fun and I miss doing that stuff.
The rest of these things are just little putzy things. I should probably keep the magnet doll thing because I think it might have been a grandma’s or something but I’m letting it go. I’m working really hard and am more determined than I’ve ever been to get this stuff out.
I know that baby steps will get it done but bigger steps will get it done faster and that’s what I need right now.
I took one of the kids to see Spider-Man tonight (good movie by the way!) and sometime during the movie, I got a text from home. A PIPE BROKE. Those are horrible words to hear when you know that a hoarder spends most of their time in the basement. I couldn’t deal with it tonight and I have to work tomorrow but as soon as I get home, that’s where I’ll be headed. I guess I’ll get lots of my challenge days done at once! Oh well, it’s good timing because I was just about caught up anyways.
I’ll update this more tomorrow when I’m able to assess the damage.
It’s kind of nice that this is another pile that seems like a lot of things! (Probably because they’re not all papers!) There’s only one thing here that I had to really think about. It was the gift card tin. Goofy, right? But it’s totally re-usable and Christmas is only a few short months away. At Christmas time, I won’t be able to find it anyways.
The Qixels are brand new. I thought the kids might like them but they’re not playing with them. I could use it for a Secret Santa gift at work in a few short months but again, I probably won’t be able to find it when I need it. The little tiny gift bag is cute too but I don’t need it right now. I feel a little bit like I’m cheating with the jeans because I think they may have been counted already. Even if I did, they didn’t make it out of the house the first time so I’m counting them again. It’s only 3 things so I’m not going to worry about it too much!
I’m not sure why sometimes 18 things seems like so many and sometimes it’s nothing but I’m always happy when they add up quickly. I’d like to say that it’s always easier now but it’s not really. Most of these clothes have survived multiple rounds of decluttering efforts and I’m finally getting rid of them. They don’t fit anyone here.
Last time around, my daughter said she wanted the light pink gloves but it’s 2 winters later and she still hasn’t worn them once. She doesn’t like pink. So they’re finally going into the get rid of pile.
Those papers in the plastic bag are cake decorating instructions. I’ve been using frosting tips since I was a little kid so why in the world would I keep that? It came with a set that I bought so that’s probably why but I don’t need them. Maybe someone else could use them.
I was sitting here wondering if I will ever get to the point of more things going out of the house than coming in on a regular basis and it made me laugh. Visions of stacks of mail, leftover 4-H craft supplies, horse and household supplies all went through my head. It’s hopeless. Ok, not really! I’m going to beat the clutter!
When I get to day 50, I’m going to total up the days so far. 5,000 things by the end of the year is totally do-able and I’m not worried about reaching that goal. Wouldn’t it be great if I could get to 6,000? I might just aim for it!
When I’m posting normal decluttering posts, I like to end them from the perspective of how many fewer things that I will ever have to pick up again. The thought of never having to pick up 5,000 things again is mind boggling!! That number is huge! But it’s for real.. I actually had to touch these 3,000 some things to put them in the buckets and bags that I’m finding them in. Every piece of paper and every toy, hair tie, and sock was touched at least once but probably more!
SOCKS!!! Just when I start thinking that I’m never going to get past all the papers, out pops more socks! There’s definitely too many socks! It’s like a bad dream. Everywhere I turn there’s more. And I’m not sure which is more boring: the socks or the papers.
I asked my son if he wanted some of the black ones because occasionally he needs to dress up. He said yes and then promptly set them down next to himself on the couch. When he left, he didn’t take them. So guess where they are. They are in the garbage with the rest of these.
Finally it’s something besides papers! A few pieces of Tupperware, a couple of Easter eggs, a wooden spoon, some cords, a shelf, shoe laces, moldy Kleenex, and a hat. I think there were a couple of Skittles in the pack and the shoe laces were extras from a new pair of shoes. There’s one more party bag too. Plus, there’s a few papers but I won’t even mention those.
August is turning out to be the paper month apparently!! Unfortunately, there’s lots more! What?!?! I don’t have a paper problem. I’m great at getting rid of paper. I’m actually really surprised at all this paper clutter. I thought I tamed this monster years ago. The worst thing is that they’re so boring!
Now that I’ve gone through most of the mountain that had piled up on the other couch, I was able to peek behind it yesterday. I put a lot of stuff back there at Christmas last year and haven’t touched it since. But when I peeked, I saw at least 2 big bags of papers back there. I’m dreading pulling them out because I’m really getting sick of going through papers. Maybe I’ll save them for last!
