The List of House Goals for 2018

I’m very anxious to finish up this house.  It’s far from being done but I only have a few minutes here and there to work on it so it’s taking forever.  In the meantime, the list keeps getting longer and longer.

Front yard needs a lot of work. Everyone has been throwing things into a utility trailer and we need to go through it.  It’s so full right now that there’s a bike sticking out over the top of the sides.  It makes the yard look like a junk yard.

Front Porch

I want to take everything off the front porch and start over.  I would like to see it as a clean slate.  This is the main project for this year but it’s also a summer project so I won’t be starting on it for awhile.

Living Room

Christmas tree needs to come down.  Lots more decluttering.  Desk project – my son is making a desk but we’ve been disagreeing on the height that it should be for about a year now.  If we ever agree, he’ll finish it up.

More decluttering

Finishing touches, like replacing molding by the doorways.

Hang pics on walls

I would like to start over in here too but I need to get some more decluttering done first. I have a wall that I can hang all of my pots and pans on but they aren’t even close to fitting.  I’d like to get the majority of them to fit.

Needs an actual remodel.  This year.  Just need to save up more money.

Carpet needs to come out but I was hoping to wait until the bathroom was finished.  I’m still debating on whether or not I will get started or wait.  I have enough to do besides this so if I don’t get to it, it’s okay.  However, the carpet is really ugly and worn out.  It’s gross.

The storage room is the biggie up here.  With the kids moving around, this room has been filling up again.  It needs a lot of work but it’s my current project.  I’d like to finish it in the next couple of weeks.

Go through more clothes.  I have severe thyroid problems so I gain and lose a lot of weight often.  I need to get rid of all the clothes that I’m not crazy about.

Attic room

Decluttering.  This room was the stash and dash room for awhile so it’s stuffed full.  It also has a lot of my son’s things in it.  Since he has a house now, I might pack some of it up and take it to him.

Major decluttering necessary.  The garage is one of those areas that ends up being a catch all.  There’s way too much random stuff in here and when the door is open, it screams “Hoarders live here”.

Major decluttering.  This is probably the very worst area of the house right now.  It needs a lot of work but I hate being down there so I always procrastinate on it.

The Whole House

The whole entire house still needs general decluttering.

Day 8 Mounds of Receipts

Receipts everywhere!  That’s what started this round of decluttering. I had receipts in my purse, in my car, and on my end table.  They kept falling out all over the place.  Time to go through them and purge!

I found a few other things besides the receipts:

  • Cat harness
  • Glove
  • Sock
  • Comb
  • 3 Horse project packet
  • Half eaten bag of BBQ chips
  • Flashlight
  • 3 packs of hamburger buns
  • Bag of plastic bags
  • Bag of way more than 5 receipts lol

Day 8 puts me at 144 things gotten rid of in July that I never have to pick up again!

I think this puts my Grand Total at 2,519 things that I never have to pick up again. Yay!  I finally made it over 2,500!!!

How Does the Mess Happen So Fast?

I’ve been cleaning, clearing, and decluttering the mess in my living room for a few months now.  It has actually stayed that way for about four months but has recently exploded.  All it took was a few weeks of being too busy to work on it and Kaboom! Mess!

I guess that shows that it takes daily intervention to keep it looking good or the stuff takes over.  My glimmer of hope in this room is the pile of things that will be leaving soon.  I’ve been giving it away left and right.  This weekend would be great for a free table because the weather is going to be beautiful but I’m too busy to set it up.  I hope next weekend is nice too.  I don’t think I have too much going on.  I also have to finish up the things that are on my list from the dreaded letter.

Another part of the problem is the lack of organization on my front porch.  I just don’t seem to be getting anywhere out there and some of it keeps ending up back in the house.  I have a lot of horse tack out there.  It’s the perfect place to keep it but it’s all over.  It’ll be easier to work on it when I can put some outside while I work on it but the weather has been terrible here. Of course, today is nice but I don’t have time to work on it.

Months of planning and my daughter’s bridal shower is done now.  It was nice.  There were only around 20 people there. We haven’t seen some of them in awhile so it was good to catch up. The wedding is in about a month and a half.

The weekend after the wedding will be crazy too but then after that, I think I will need to start setting weekly goals for my house.  I would like the storage room gone through by the time school starts in the fall.  Thankfully, cleaning goes so much faster now.  I don’t have to spend any time making room to put something away.  I just don’t want to run out of steam too soon!

Planning is going to be key to finishing this up.  Setting up goals and sticking to them will help me finish everything.  Each room needs a little work.  It’ll be slow going for a few months (or a lot of months) but I’m getting there.

Letting the Table Go

I wish I would have taken a picture of the table but I didn’t think of it until I was getting ready to leave the city dump.  At one time, it was a beautiful little table but last fall, while I was re-doing my living room, it ended up outside.  I didn’t mean for it to end up outside but I didn’t have enough room for it.  I only wanted it out there while I moved things around but it never made it back in.  I had it under a tarp but our weather has been wonderful for mold and it got a hold of the table, along with a lot of water.

So, I had to let it go.

Here’s the story of the table and why it was very hard for me to throw it into that giant dumpster.

I was at a rummage sale and the lady had a lot of stuff that I really liked.  She was really nice and we had a lot in common.  When I saw the table that she was selling for $20, I loved it.  It was so pretty and elegant looking.  I went to get the money out and realized that I didn’t have enough.  She was an older lady and it almost seemed like her daughters were pressuring her to get rid of things so they convinced her to let me buy it for less.  I think I only had $12 or $15 and she seemed very hesitant but then she said, “I’ll give it to for that if you promise to love it as much as I did.”

I feel terrible about what happened to the table.  I almost kept it even though my mom kept telling me that it needed to go.  And then the guy that was helping me unload the trailer of stuff at the dump looked at it and said, “It’s toast.”  I knew he was right so I put it in the dumpster.

I’m still a little sad about it tonight but at least it’s not outside my house anymore.  The building inspector should be along any day now and that’s one less thing in my yard, which by the way, isn’t looking too bad.

I Shouldn’t Have Touched the Front Porch

I knew I shouldn’t have tried to work on the front porch tonight.  My plan of working on it Saturday night hadn’t worked out so I should have left it for next weekend.  Instead, I decided to go ahead and start on it.  I only got a little bit done and now my entire living room is full of porch clutter.

Here’s what the porch looks like now.  The first picture is after I moved everything into my living room.  The second picture is the before pic.  It’s hard to tell that it’s the same corner but you can tell that it is if you look at the red bridle bag hanging by the window.  And yes, those saddles were under all that stuff.  You can see the horn on the western saddle sticking out a little bit. The porch is stacked almost 4 feet high with everything under the sun like that sledding tube, a hose, a cereal holder and lots more.

I think these are some of the most embarrassing pictures that I’ve posted so far. You can really see the hoarding in these pictures.  It’s just piles of STUFF.  Why is there never any organization?  It’s going to take a few more months before this porch really gets cleared out but the more that I get rid of, the easier it gets.

Here’s a few pics of the other corner on that side of the front porch.  You can see the glider chair now!!  There’s still a lot of things on it but at least you can see it.  Before it was completely buried.  If there were shelves or a cabinet or something like that in there, things could finally get organized.

The stuff on the chair is all ready to be gotten rid of. I just can’t get myself to take it to St. Vinny’s or Goodwill.  There’s a lot of brand new stuff in there.  Selling it is a huge hassle too so I think I want to go with the free table method of giving it away.  Unfortunately, it’ll have to wait until the weekend.  It will just have to stay piled up until then.

This is only one side of the front porch and there’s still a lot of stuff that I haven’t cleaned up yet.  The other side is stacked at least 3 or 4 feet high too.  I’ll do a little bit everyday.  I can’t wait to see the end result.  I’m hoping to make some nice improvements by Sunday.

Update:  It’s been a few months and the front porch is still a disaster.  I still haven’t found a way to organize anything and it’s still the catch all place for everything that comes in or out of the house.

Procrastinating on the Front Porch

I planned to spend the day working on my front porch.  I have some plans for it but it’s loaded with a random selection of clutter that needs to be dealt with.

Certain things always go out there, like all the horse tack, but there’s some stuff that I just don’t know what to do with so I put it out there.  It’s also the place where all the stuff that I want to get rid of goes before making it’s way to the car.

clutter filled front porch

The stuff has been piling up for a few months now.  It’s way too cold out there during the winter to do anything besides open the door and throw more out there.  Now that it’s a little warmer, it’s time to clean it up.  It’s getting hard to get into the house.  The pathway is down to about 2 feet wide so when you’re carrying things, it’s hard to navigate your way through.

I procrastinated all day long because a lot came up that I wasn’t expecting.  I took a little nap this evening so now it’s time to start working on it.  I started on the left side and brought it all into the house.  Probably not the best idea but since it’s so late and getting cold outside, I thought it would be better this way.

cleaning the front porch

Now I have a huge pile in my living room.

cleaning up the front porch

I see lots of things that I can get rid of already.  I’m debating about the Little Tikes School Bus.  I want to get rid of it.  I”m just not sure if it’s something to give away or something to sell. I think I’m going to decide in the morning. The purple ting was supposed to be for in the horse trailer but we’ve never used it and don’t plan on it.  There’s also a driving harness for a bigger pony than the one we have. I was going to sell it but one of the pieces need a repair.

I could use the money from selling a few things but I think the need to get rid of some things quickly might outweigh that.  I’m hoping that I can finish this tomorrow.  Even if I only get half of the porch done tomorrow, it will be better than none of it! I’ll get started in the morning.

Less Clutter = More Fun!

Today was one of those days where I didn’t want to leave the house because I’m right in the middle of a drastic decluttering and I really wanted to finish it today.  I’m busy for the next week and a half so this was my last chance to get some things done.

But we had a few events going on and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to miss them.  One was an award banquet for my daughter and the other one was going to a national show horse barn to see a demonstration about different riding disciplines.

I decided that we needed to have fun and not let the hoard hold us prisoners!  I think I made the right decision.

We got to see this:

and this:

The demonstration was awesome but then afterwards, we were able to go walk around the barn and got to see one of them training a few of the horses.  It was fabulous.  They have a huge indoor round pen where they do the training which is great.  He said that they even train the horses to drive in that round arena. I wish that I had one of those for working with my mini horse!

After we left that barn, we went to our barn and helped clean and got the horses in for the night.  We couldn’t take our horses out though because there was ice everywhere.  It would have been too dangerous trying to walk them to the arena so we just got to say hi to them and that’s it.  After watching that demonstration, we really wanted to work with our horses a little bit.

We got home late but I was able to do quite a bit.  My son did a lot by himself before I got home so he is officially moved into the other bedroom now.  The smaller room is now the new storage room and it’s about half way full.  I still have one more room full of stuff that needs to go in there and then we’ll be able to move pretty freely through the whole house, all except for that room, the basement and the garage but it will be awhile before I get to those.

A Few Things I Found

I have found a few pretty amazing things in the storage room.  I found a gift card for Starbucks for $15.00.  I thought that was cool.  Next I found a $10 gift certificate for Redbox.  There was even a folder with a 4-H check for $60.00 from 2009.  A little more digging and I found 2 movie tickets.

As I watch a movie and drink my Starbucks, I’ll be able to color because I found a brand new box of colored pencils.  I looked at every store over Christmas trying to find some but everyone was sold out.  Apparently adult coloring books are the rage around here right  now.

Then I found one more priceless thing – a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Revisited book.  It was one of the books that I wanted to buy and I found it in my own house. How amazing is that?

These are all reasons that I’m struggling so hard in the storage room.  I think there’s some really great stuff in there.  It’s just that none of it has any place to go.  I don’t know where to put any of it.  I should use the gift certificates or give them away and I should sit down and use my colored pencils.

Decluttering the Storage Room

I spent the weekend working on decluttering the “storage room” in my house.  It’s not really a storage room, that’s just what we call it because when a holiday comes along, we shove all of the clutter in there.  It’s actually the biggest bedroom upstairs and I want to kick myself every time I think about this cluttered room.  Organized storage would be much better.

My 6’1″ son is sleeping in a twin size bed right now.  It’s too small for him but the room he’s in is too small for a bigger bed.  If I could get the “storage room” cleaned out, I could move him into that room and then get him a bigger bed.  I can’t get through it all fast enough.  I’m struggling.  I could only get through so much before I had to give it up for the weekend.  I was doing too much standing there and not enough getting rid of.

I have 4 big buckets of stuff ready to get rid of (I made a little progress).  I’m kind of waiting until I have a few more because it gives me that sense of accomplishment when I see it all together as one big pile.  I also like the feeling of seeing no room to walk around and then when it’s gone, empty space.  That’s a great feeling too!

We might have some friends coming over on Saturday night.  I’m a little worried about it and I still might have to cancel.  The kids are looking forward to it so they’ve been helping all weekend but it might not be enough.  I will be really sad if I have to cancel this because we have too much of a mess here.  It’s a pretty common thing to happen here though.  There’s a lot of times that we can’t have people over.  It’s one of the biggest reasons that I want this house cleaned out.

Almost done with the entry way!

staining wood

All of these stained pieces of wood will be put together tomorrow to make a new entry way.

It’s been such a bad week with my horse Flash that I didn’t think we would ever finish the entry way.  I wanted to finish all the staining last week but didn’t.  Today, since I was looking for a way to keep my mind off everything that’s been going on, I was happy to do the staining and, thankfully, it took all day!  There was a lot of wood.

When I first got to the shop where I was working on it, I finished up the boards that were already stained.  They just needed polyurethane put on them.  I wasn’t sure if I should  do one coat or two.  I ended up doing two coats and I’m glad I did!  They look beautiful!

I put the polyurethane on these boards tonight and they look great now!

After I finished that part, I stained the rest of the boards.  They all had to be sanded first and then wiped down before I could put the stain on.  Since it was cheaper wood than what I used for the coat rack, there were a lot of pits and they soaked up the stain way too fast.  I wasn’t in a hurry though so I just kept working at it and got them all covered.

It’s definitely not a perfect job but it will be in a corner that’s rather dark so I don’t think you will see the imperfections. I had the boards for the coat rack part sitting there all week and they looked good.

I left all of the boards at the shop tonight to dry so they’ll be ready to be put together first thing in the morning.  I can’t wait!!!

Isn’t it pretty?
