Day 18 The Single Gloves and a Handful of Markers

day 18 decluttering challengeI wonder where the other gloves are…

Stray socks and gloves are OUT!  I don’t have time or enough energy to match them all up so if their pair is missing, oh well.  I’m going to keep getting rid of them. I’m also getting rid of markers, a comb, some bottles of bubbles and a pencil.  I’m done playing around, this stuff has got to go!

Day 17 Does Ten Year Old Mosquito Spray Work?

day 17 decluttering challenge

I’m not going to find out!

I have no idea if the mosquito spray would work and I’m not going to try it.  I’ve been having really bad reactions to mosquito spray lately so I’m trying to avoid it.  The rest of the batch of stuff is just little junky fun stuff like the lollipop, beads and lip gloss.  I’m getting rid of a few random socks and a weird glove.  The shell necklace is kind of cute but no one will miss it.

Day 6 and I’m in the Kitchen

Did I happen to mention how much I like the randomness of my challenge for July?  I just need to declutter 18 things a day from anywhere in the house.  I went into the kitchen to make dinner, opened up the refrigerator door and saw 18 things waiting for the decluttering to begin!  Unfortunately, I’m not posting a pic because the things that came out of the refrigerator weren’t, shall we say, very photogenic?  So, no pics today!  I’m not going to list them out either because I tossed them as they came out.

Minimal Fuzzies in the Fridge!

I am also happy to report that nothing was more than 2 months past it’s expiration date. There weren’t really any fuzzies either.

I’m up to 108 things for July!

Day 4 It’s a Holiday but Still Time for Decluttering

I woke up this morning very thankful for a day off.  I’m already getting behind on my July challenge and it’s only the 4th!  It was a great opportunity to get caught up.  18 things a day didn’t seem like a whole lot, until I started doing it.  So, I started cleaning out the bathroom closet.  I said I was going to do it a few weeks ago but procrastinated.  Since I haven’t been able to shove anything else in it for awhile, I knew I would find stuff to get rid of.  There’s still a lot more in there but this is it for today.

The List:

  • No More Tangles (hasn’t been used in years)
  • Mascara (hasn’t been used in even more years)
  • Mascara (ditto)
  • Black cherry shower gel
  • Blue hair color (I thought we could use this to paint the horse blue at fair for the costume contest.  He could be an Avatar but that would probably be mean)
  • Shower power
  • Shampoo (can shampoo go bad?)
  • Coconut Lime Breeze shower gel (this is brand new and will be out on the free table)
  • Toothpaste (it’s only a couple years past the date stamped on it)
  • Cocoa butter
  • Hotel shampoo (Of course I take the ones we don’t use there.  Doesn’t everyone?)
  • Aloe vesta lotion
  • Deodorant (Ok, this item is of particular concern to me.  Thankfully it’s new and still has the foil wrapper over the holes because it’s liquid.  Yep, liquid.  How in the world does that even happen?  I don’t get it.)
  • Body spray (this is brand new too and will also be headed for the free table.)
  • Skin so soft
  • Vinyl
  • Hand towel
  • Pillowcase

Hopefully I can find some more spots like the bathroom closet where there’s plenty of things to get rid of!  I still have a few shelves in here so I’ll head back in a few days.

Day 2 of the July Challenge

Day 2 was a very busy day and we didn’t get home until late at night.  I still managed to get 18 things together.  Things are going well so far.  I’m hoping that the randomness of this challenge doesn’t make it too hard to see progress but I think it will be okay.

Here’s my list…

  • Lemonade
  • Cold Brew Tea
  • Week old hot dog buns

124 Things!

(Pics are below)

I have 3 big bags ready to go to the donation place.  I just can’t believe how little of an effect this has made.  I still don’t have the latest count because I’ve been working on it so late every night but I think it has to be over 800 by now.

As I wrote that, a beautiful thought went through my head – that’s 800 things that I will never have to pick up again.  800 less things to find homes for in my house.  Wow, that’s a lot less to take care of.  Maybe once the next 800 is gone, you’ll be able to see a difference in my house.  The way my living room looks right now, all 800 might come from that one room. I think I’ll be able to find another 800 on the front porch.

Time for the pics:

27 things… the tip of the iceberg!

It seems like nothing compared to what I still have sitting here ready to get listed out.

decluttering challenge

I keep thinking that I’m almost done in the storage room so I went to check it out today.  There’s a few more buckets in the corner but then I noticed that there’s a bunch of other smaller boxes tucked in all over the place.  I’m close to being done in there but further away than I thought.  The living room is full.  This is going to take at least another week.  I’ll keep plugging away at it.

The Free Table at the End of the Day

decluttering challenge

At the beginning, there were a lot of things lined up in front of the table and none by the end of the day.

I can’t believe no one took the rainbow slippers!

After cleaning up the free table tonight, I felt like there was still a lot left.  I filled up two black bags full of stuff and ran them over to the thrift store.  Only two bags out of the many that I put out there.

When I think about all the things that I had out there, I realize there was a lot more than two bags full.  Some of the things that were gone included a leather backpack, about 8 pairs of shoes and boots, an alarm clock, stampers, puzzles, clothes, books, notebooks, binders, crayons, jewelry, snow pants, a snowsuit and lots of stuffed animals – including some of those Beanie Babies!!

Too Much Good Stuff on the Free Table?

I don’t want to think about it too much though!  I gave a lot away and I don’t want to regret getting rid of some of it.  Maybe I should be deleting the pics of the free tables that I set up.  It might be better if I don’t have anything to remind me of what was on them.

For the first time, one of my kids was a little embarrassed about the free table.  His girlfriend was coming over and I think he felt a little funny about it.  I don’t know why though.  It just looks like a rummage sale except that there’s a big FREE STUFF sign in front of it.  I like that I can set the table up and leave.  No sitting there all day long waiting for people to haggle about the price. I love doing the free table.

I hope everyone gets to enjoy the things that they took today!

In case you forgot what it looked like in the morning, here’s the pic again:

free table

Unfortunately, it was a little dark in the shade when I took the pic so it’s hard to see how much is on the tables. Things were really stacked up pretty high.

It’s a Great Day for a Free Table Today

free tableIt’s a beautifully perfect free table day!  I got up early this morning and set up two tables.  My mom was willing to help me get everything out.  We dragged the buckets out by the curb and set it all up.  Then I stuck the sign in the ground and voila! Free table!!

My mom is great and buys cool stuff for us all the time.  I keep telling her to stop but she’s a mom so she doesn’t listen.  Of course, she was going nuts today as she was putting stuff out.  “This is so cute!”  “I think so and so can use this!” “This is brand new!”  It was hilarious.  I told her that she could take whatever she wanted for whoever she wanted but she couldn’t bring it back here.

I kept telling her that with all this stuff out, it barely made a dent in my house.  Later she kept asking me, “Did it really not make a dent?”  I said, “Yes, really, it didn’t make a dent.”  If I want to keep all of it, I need a much bigger house.  Since that’s not going to happen any time soon, it needs to go.

What if the Free Table is a Flop?

I’m always worried that no one is going to stop and take anything, especially on days like today.  My road is usually a busy road but there’s construction a few blocks away that is redirecting the traffic a different way so it’s pretty quiet today.  Someone with about 4 or 5 kids stopped a little while ago and took a lot of it but there’s still quite a bit left on the tables.  I hope more of it goes.

I will leave it set up until around 7 or 7:30.  Everything that’s left is getting put in bags and then it’s going to Goodwill.  I’m not letting it come back into the house.  I still have lots more to go but this is all that fit on the tables today.
