Day 25 Let it Rain!

Some of the things that are leaving are an umbrella, a frisbee, an airplane, a cat toy, and a bag of grain.  The rest is more papers plus some hand sanitizer and a cell phone holder.

I am moving right along here! These last few days haven’t been very impressive but the numbers are adding up.  It’s been mostly small things and papers.  I’ve gotten rid of 450 things since I started this declutter challenge at the beginning of July.

The Grand Decluttering Total after day 25 is 2,969 things!!

Only 2 more days and I’ll be over 3,000.  I can’t wait!!

I’ve Been Decluttering All Day Today

I’m so determined to get rid of things that I think I’m bordering on obsessed now.  I just can’t seem to even make a dent.  Usually when I get the get rid of stuff out, you can see a difference.  This time however, it doesn’t look any different.  After taking out 2 big garbage bags full, filling a donation box, and delivering a bag of food to my mom, it still doesn’t look any better in my living room.

Apparently things were piling up higher than I was realizing.  I guess that happens when clutter is invisible to you. It appears when I look at it through a camera.  I don’t know why.  I’ve been taking pictures all day hoping to see improvement but it hasn’t happened yet.  Things must be getting better though.  How couldn’t they with everything that’s gone out the door?

Day 20 Continuing on with the Small Things

decluttering challengeNothing at all exciting in this group of things.  They’re small and I’m glad I’m getting rid of them. The only thing that I thought about keeping was the make up.  It’s brand new but the brushes are gone. I decided to let it go.

Day 19 Letting Go of a Few Books

A Few Books and Small things

All these little things are adding up quickly.  Maybe that’s why I keep them around so long.  They’re small and they don’t seem to take up too much space but I still have to pick them up.  I feel like getting rid of them won’t make much of a difference but there’s so many!  It has to be making a difference.

I have 3 books here.  I’ve been picking up books lately because they look interesting but as I’ve said before, I’m a very slow reader.  One book could take me months to read.  Since I haven’t touched any of these books, well, ever, I think it’s time to let them go to someone else.  I have plenty here that I really do want to read and I have to stay realistic about how long it will be before getting through them.

I thought about keeping the knee high nylons but then I remembered that 10 year old elastic usually disintegrates.  There’s more hair ties, little kid scissors, bead necklace, some old ibuprofen and other small random things.  I’m glad to see this all go.  I don’t want to pick any of it up ever again.

Day 5 Steady Progress Being Made

I’m excited!  Progress has been so slow the last few months that I had to do something.  My house was looking more and more like it belonged on an episode of Hoarders.  So I decided to take on a massive challenge – 18 things a day.  It sure doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s adding up quickly.  I thought it would take a couple of weeks before I would see a difference but I already do!  Yay!

The List for Day 5:

  • Pack of cookies – huge waste of money because they were buried so no one knew I bought them
  • 2 Boxes of Sweethearts
  • Junk mail
  • Pile of scraps from punch out letters
  • Old iron
  • Blouse
  • Fork
  • Card holder
  • 2 Make up bags
  • Pillowcase
  • Rag
  • Inhaler
  • Gauze
  • Piece of vinyl
  • 2 Blockbuster movies

Almost all of this stuff will go right into the garbage.  Not much here for the free table.  Even though I’m really excited that I can see a difference already, I have to admit, it’s getting harder already too.  It took me a long time to pick out these 18 things.  I’m glad I’m not restricting myself to any particular room or area.  It’s nice to mix it up every day or take one thing from here or there.  I did a lot of wandering around.

Total = 90 Things I Never Have to Pick Up or Put Away Again!!

Day 4 It’s a Holiday but Still Time for Decluttering

I woke up this morning very thankful for a day off.  I’m already getting behind on my July challenge and it’s only the 4th!  It was a great opportunity to get caught up.  18 things a day didn’t seem like a whole lot, until I started doing it.  So, I started cleaning out the bathroom closet.  I said I was going to do it a few weeks ago but procrastinated.  Since I haven’t been able to shove anything else in it for awhile, I knew I would find stuff to get rid of.  There’s still a lot more in there but this is it for today.

The List:

  • No More Tangles (hasn’t been used in years)
  • Mascara (hasn’t been used in even more years)
  • Mascara (ditto)
  • Black cherry shower gel
  • Blue hair color (I thought we could use this to paint the horse blue at fair for the costume contest.  He could be an Avatar but that would probably be mean)
  • Shower power
  • Shampoo (can shampoo go bad?)
  • Coconut Lime Breeze shower gel (this is brand new and will be out on the free table)
  • Toothpaste (it’s only a couple years past the date stamped on it)
  • Cocoa butter
  • Hotel shampoo (Of course I take the ones we don’t use there.  Doesn’t everyone?)
  • Aloe vesta lotion
  • Deodorant (Ok, this item is of particular concern to me.  Thankfully it’s new and still has the foil wrapper over the holes because it’s liquid.  Yep, liquid.  How in the world does that even happen?  I don’t get it.)
  • Body spray (this is brand new too and will also be headed for the free table.)
  • Skin so soft
  • Vinyl
  • Hand towel
  • Pillowcase

Hopefully I can find some more spots like the bathroom closet where there’s plenty of things to get rid of!  I still have a few shelves in here so I’ll head back in a few days.

Day 2 of the July Challenge

Day 2 was a very busy day and we didn’t get home until late at night.  I still managed to get 18 things together.  Things are going well so far.  I’m hoping that the randomness of this challenge doesn’t make it too hard to see progress but I think it will be okay.

Here’s my list…

  • Diet Iced Tea
  • Decaffeinated Tea
  • Lemonade
  • Cold Brew Tea
  • Week old hot dog buns
  • Pasta salad
  • Molasses cookies
  • Roll of streamers
  • 2 pairs of breeches
  • 2 concession signs
  • Catalog
  • Two week old brownie
  • Pharmacy bag
  • Catalog post card
  • Jalapenos
  • Water chestnuts

After 2 days, I’ve gotten rid of 36 things.

The Challenge for July

I’ve done lots of challenges with Anne Lene @ minimalistsometimes but today I am starting my very own because I know what I want to accomplish in July.  Since today is the 1st, I figured it was the perfect time to start.  ProsperityandCalamities had given me the idea to find some new websites with some new ideas for motivation.  It inspired me all right but I still need to spend some more time looking over those sites.  For now, I’m going with this.  18 things each day in July.  It’s baby steps (only 18 things a day!) that will hopefully look like a big step by the end of the month (558!)  My secondary goal is to find a new idea for August.

Here’s my list for day #1:

  • Yarn
  • 3 labels
  • 2 Metlife flyers
  • Pair of socks (Purpleslobinrecovery – it’s a PAIR!!)
  • One orange glove (they can’t all be in pairs you know!)
  • Empty glue stick
  • 3 pieces of junk mail
  • 2 Ninja Turtle Jello molds (these are going to be worth a fortune someday, I just know it, and I’m still getting rid of them!)
  • Pillow case
  • Empty movie case
  • Empty letter template
  • Goofy little thing about signs.  This is one of those stupid FB things but of course someone had to print it for me because if you look at Taurus, it’s Hoarder.  Guess what my sign is… Taurus. Nice.

That’s it. 18 for today.

Now I have a million other things that I need to run off and do.  Simple enough!

A Few Hours of Impromptu Decluttering

Impromptu declutteringA few weeks ago, there was another fire in a hoarder house and the occupant couldn’t get out and the fire fighters couldn’t get in easily.  The person inside died.  It’s just so sad to think about that.  The person may not have even realized they had a problem.  Or maybe they’ve been struggling with it for years, trying to deal with it, but the clutter monster won this time.

It sounds silly to call it a clutter monster, as if the clutter is a living being, but some days it seems like it has a life of it’s own.  Flylady says it best when she says that you can’t organize clutter, you can only get rid of it.  It takes over the whole house filling every bit of empty space.  I swear the stuff multiplies on it’s own.  Very few people can handle an organized hoard, I’m definitely not one of them, so I must keep decluttering.

As I was watching an update on the news story about the fire last Friday morning before work, I got that sick feeling.  There’s too much stuff in my house.  Are the hallways blocked?  Could we get through if we needed to?  Would we be tripping over things?  Next, I thought about the worst part of my house right now.  It’s the basement for sure but since I’m already short on time, is it worth it to work down there?  This sparked my impromptu decluttering!

It was an early day of work for me and as soon as I got home, I went into the basement.  I had a goal of working on one small shelf.  I decided to tackle two shelves instead and I’m glad I did.  It wasn’t too much to handle and I surprisingly got rid of a lot!  I guess this really is getting easier.

Here’s the list from my impromptu decluttering:

  • Bread maker
  • Insulated Lunch bag
  • Cookie Tin
  • Plastic pumpkin
  • Pager system (when is the last time you saw one of these?)
  • Tupperware Tray
  • Giant cooler cup
  • Blue drink cooler
  • Electric wok (I’ve always wanted to try this but after 15 years I think it’s time to give up that dream)
  • Little purse
  • Safari Alarm Clock
  • Fondue set
  • HALO game case (yep it’s empty)
  • Santa candle lamp (I think this is what went with that little shade I got rid of a few weeks ago)
  • Wrapping paper
  • Toy bowl
  • Another cookie tin
  • 5 Peppermint taffies (I wonder how long those have been down there?)
  • Plastic terydachtl – (why can’t I think of how to spell that?  It’s a plastic dinosaur)
  • Sock
  • Bratz Dollz boot
  • Little toy girl with no head
  • Princess hair tie
  • Piece of train track
  • Metrics made easy card
  • Playdoh knife
  • Plastic turtle
  • Tiny plastic horse bridle
  • Toy boat
  • Square Tupperware container
  • Half yard stick (who knows where the other half is)
  • Wooden train car (one of those fake knock offs)
  • Waffle block
  • Toy plate
  • Tiny plastic dinosaur
  • Pencil cover
  • Digimon action figure stamper
  • Stuffed animal  (dinosaur actually)
  • Foldable frisbee
  • Half of a toy – (no idea what to call this thing so let’s leave it at that)

  • VHS battery
  • Toy slide
  • First aid instructions
  • Bubble wand
  • Another little dinosaur
  • Easter tree
  • Green hair tie
  • Jesus pin

54 Things!

impromptu decluttering
Not too bad since I didn’t even have plans to be decluttering that day!  And I know I say it all the time but that’s 54 things that I never have to pick up again!  I’m sure that I’ve picked these things up and moved them around the house many, many times.  What a waste of time, energy, and space!  I’m sure they’ve caused arguments with the kids because they were laying on the floor a million times.  What a stress on the family!  All because of STUFF that we never needed in the first place.

Just let it go…….

Here’s a few after pics!!
