Day 33 Is There a Paper Factory in My House?

I’m kind of counting out papers for pics. Sometimes there’s more than 18 in a stack but I could use up all my days on paper if I didn’t add more.  I know they’re not interesting pics either but I like seeing it all laid out there.  Where did all this paper come from?

Bonus:  One of the kids came home tonight and said, “Hey mom, it’s starting to look better in here.”  How cool is that?

Day 27 Finally Some Actual Stuff to Get Rid Of

decluttering challenge day 26

Some of these things were hard to get rid of but I’m getting pickier about what I keep.  I think the hardest was the Pink Ladies jacket.  It’s a little kids size 5.  How cute is that?  It was my daughter’s but I just don’t have any place to keep it.  The next hardest was the little lantern because it’s like brand new.  I don’t even know if it was ever used.  But I know that if it was never used after all these years, why would I start using it now?

The book

Multiple Streams of Income – How To Generate a Lifetime of Unlimited Wealth by Robert G. Allen.  It looks like it would be a good book but have I mentioned that I read really slowly?  It would take me a lifetime to read the darn book so I’m getting rid of it.

The costume

Last but not least.. the Supergirl costume.  I just thought it was really cute when my girls were teenagers and wore it to Halloween parties. I’ve also sold quite a few costumes and I know you can get some decent money for them.  This week is about peace of mind and not the money so bye bye to the costume.

18 more things gone but you still can’t tell the difference.

Day 19 Letting Go of a Few Books

A Few Books and Small things

All these little things are adding up quickly.  Maybe that’s why I keep them around so long.  They’re small and they don’t seem to take up too much space but I still have to pick them up.  I feel like getting rid of them won’t make much of a difference but there’s so many!  It has to be making a difference.

I have 3 books here.  I’ve been picking up books lately because they look interesting but as I’ve said before, I’m a very slow reader.  One book could take me months to read.  Since I haven’t touched any of these books, well, ever, I think it’s time to let them go to someone else.  I have plenty here that I really do want to read and I have to stay realistic about how long it will be before getting through them.

I thought about keeping the knee high nylons but then I remembered that 10 year old elastic usually disintegrates.  There’s more hair ties, little kid scissors, bead necklace, some old ibuprofen and other small random things.  I’m glad to see this all go.  I don’t want to pick any of it up ever again.

Day 7 of the July Challenge

So many reasons to keep up at this pace.  I even have a new slogan:  18 things a day until 2018.  Even though it technically qualifies as a SMART goal, I don’t know if it really is.  It’s a little hard to keep up.  I can do my best though and everyone in my house will be better off for it whether I make it or not!

I even did the math.  If I can do it for 112.11 days out of the remaining 174 days of the year, I will have gotten rid of 2018 things.  And that will put me pretty close to 5,000 things in total.  Maybe I’ll make more than 112 days and actually reach the 5,000 goal.  Ok, enough day dreaming for now.

Here’s my 18 things for Day 7:

  • Shape-Ups shoes
  • Tupperware pitcher.  I like these pitchers but I have a bunch of them and I don’t need a bunch.
  • Fisher Price veterinarian clinic
  • Empty shoe box
  • Nail clipper kit
  • The Box Blockbuster movie
  • The Upside of Anger Blockbuster movie – I don’t know if the movies are actually in the cases.  I didn’t look.
  • Pink Peeps.  I won’t let the kids eat these so obviously they’re from someone else.  We do eat the yellow ones though.  And Peeps people, if you’re reading this, even people who eat candy look at the ingredients.
  • Toothpaste.  Out it goes, more bad ingredients.
  • A sock – yes, just one 🙂
  • Pillow
  • Half drank bottle of water.  You all know what I’m talking about.  I have, however, found many uses for these half empty bottles of water.  It works in my clothes iron.  I pour it into the cat dishes.  The plants don’t mind it either.
  • Cat snow pants.  Yes, you read that right.  Cat snow pants.  It snows here.
  • Western hat
  • Black clogs
  • Empty pill bottle
  • Empty jewelry gift box
  • And, last but not least.. are you ready for this?… Teen Compression Short & Cup.  New.  Still in the package.  This was actually part of a white elephant gift that I got last Christmas at work.  It’s been in the back of my truck for no reason ever since.

126 Things So Far in July

day 7 of the July Challenge

Pots and Pans Fill the Cupboards

When I was about 12 years old, I spent my summer babysitting for a little boy up the street.  We didn’t normally cook food but on one particular day, the mom gave me something to cook.  I had to ask the little boy where they kept the pots and pans.  At my house, we had about 10 different frying pans to choose from, a bunch of the quart size ones, and about 20 in between sizes.  There was no shortage of pots and pans.  Small ones and big ones.  Nice ones and well used ones.  I thought everyone had that many pots and pans.  It was normal to me.

He told me which cabinet they were in.  Cabinet?  Just one cabinet?  I opened it up and there was only one pan of each size.  I remember the day very vividly even though it was a long time ago.  It was strange to not have so many choices, almost confusing to me. I asked him where the rest were and he told me that was all they had.  Searching through the rest of the cabinets, I was panicking a little bit.  When I asked him why they didn’t have more, he asked why they needed more.  We cooked a lot more after that and it was nice to know that even though there were only a few pots and pans, it was enough.  We didn’t need anymore.

Pots and Pans Everywhere

I remembered this tonight as I looked around my kitchen at all the pots and pans everywhere.  Why do we have so many?  A lot of them even have teflon flaking off and they should be thrown away.  If we only had a couple, there would only be a couple to wash.  There wouldn’t be stacks of them.  I would be able to put them away instead having to leave them out because they don’t fit in a cabinet.

What about you?  Do you have lots of pots and pans?  Or just a few? I’m curious to know which is more common.

Day 6 and I’m in the Kitchen

Did I happen to mention how much I like the randomness of my challenge for July?  I just need to declutter 18 things a day from anywhere in the house.  I went into the kitchen to make dinner, opened up the refrigerator door and saw 18 things waiting for the decluttering to begin!  Unfortunately, I’m not posting a pic because the things that came out of the refrigerator weren’t, shall we say, very photogenic?  So, no pics today!  I’m not going to list them out either because I tossed them as they came out.

Minimal Fuzzies in the Fridge!

I am also happy to report that nothing was more than 2 months past it’s expiration date. There weren’t really any fuzzies either.

I’m up to 108 things for July!

Day 4 It’s a Holiday but Still Time for Decluttering

I woke up this morning very thankful for a day off.  I’m already getting behind on my July challenge and it’s only the 4th!  It was a great opportunity to get caught up.  18 things a day didn’t seem like a whole lot, until I started doing it.  So, I started cleaning out the bathroom closet.  I said I was going to do it a few weeks ago but procrastinated.  Since I haven’t been able to shove anything else in it for awhile, I knew I would find stuff to get rid of.  There’s still a lot more in there but this is it for today.

The List:

  • No More Tangles (hasn’t been used in years)
  • Mascara (hasn’t been used in even more years)
  • Mascara (ditto)
  • Black cherry shower gel
  • Blue hair color (I thought we could use this to paint the horse blue at fair for the costume contest.  He could be an Avatar but that would probably be mean)
  • Shower power
  • Shampoo (can shampoo go bad?)
  • Coconut Lime Breeze shower gel (this is brand new and will be out on the free table)
  • Toothpaste (it’s only a couple years past the date stamped on it)
  • Cocoa butter
  • Hotel shampoo (Of course I take the ones we don’t use there.  Doesn’t everyone?)
  • Aloe vesta lotion
  • Deodorant (Ok, this item is of particular concern to me.  Thankfully it’s new and still has the foil wrapper over the holes because it’s liquid.  Yep, liquid.  How in the world does that even happen?  I don’t get it.)
  • Body spray (this is brand new too and will also be headed for the free table.)
  • Skin so soft
  • Vinyl
  • Hand towel
  • Pillowcase

Hopefully I can find some more spots like the bathroom closet where there’s plenty of things to get rid of!  I still have a few shelves in here so I’ll head back in a few days.

Day 2 of the July Challenge

Day 2 was a very busy day and we didn’t get home until late at night.  I still managed to get 18 things together.  Things are going well so far.  I’m hoping that the randomness of this challenge doesn’t make it too hard to see progress but I think it will be okay.

Here’s my list…

  • Diet Iced Tea
  • Decaffeinated Tea
  • Lemonade
  • Cold Brew Tea
  • Week old hot dog buns
  • Pasta salad
  • Molasses cookies
  • Roll of streamers
  • 2 pairs of breeches
  • 2 concession signs
  • Catalog
  • Two week old brownie
  • Pharmacy bag
  • Catalog post card
  • Jalapenos
  • Water chestnuts

After 2 days, I’ve gotten rid of 36 things.
