The Abundance of Clothes In the Basement

In the basement of my mom’s friend’s house, there’s an abundant amount of clothing hanging up. A lot of these clothes still have tags on them. They’re very nice but she really doesn’t need that many.

My plan for her is to get rid of 3 pieces of clothing each day until we go back there on Sunday. If she does that, it might be enough to help us reach the five foot goal around the furnace.

However, I will be completely surprised if she actually does it. I think there’s about a -1% chance that she’ll get rid of a single thing. Even if she does do it, she’ll bring in more than that amount by Sunday. Yep, I said it. How do I know that? Because she went to the store yesterday and bought 3 or 4 shirts, shoes, and a table runner.

Did I mention the shoes that were on the stairs? She had 12 brand new expensive pairs of shoes on the stairs. My mom convinced her to give 2 pairs to their other friend, which she did. But then she bought more!

Two weeks. That’s all I’m asking for. Two weeks to get the path cleared to the furnace before bringing more in the house. She can’t do it. This is really stressful. I really feel like this is a hopeless situation and once we get to the furnace and reorganize the sunroom, I’ll have to be done. As much as I would like to get to the bathroom so we can fix the toilet, I just don’t think it’s possible. I really don’t. That beautiful house will eventually be condemned.

I’m hoping I’ll have a better attitude when we leave there on Sunday. I’ll share the update and hopefully get more pics. I’m way over my head so if you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments.

  • Jen, it sounds she really needs a professional pyschologist, and an organizer trained in hoarding. It really is a mental illness. She is so blessed to have you and your mom tryu to help. That is so wonderful of y’all, but I really think she needs a professional.
    Warm hugs.

    • She really does!! I think this is way beyond us. I was hoping that we could at least get it to a point where she would let someone else come to the house but I don’t even think that’s do-able. Our Catholic social services here has an elderly hoarding help department that my mom suggested to her a few years ago but she refused to call. Maybe we’ll try that route again soon.
