As an eBay seller, I grab these good memory kinds of things whenever I see them somewhere for cheap. Sometimes, I get home and realize that they’re just in too bad of shape to bother trying to sell them. So they sit in a pile until I finally let them go again.
I like to think that getting rid of them is an easy task since I can’t make any money on them and I have no place to store them. They weren’t even mine to start with so I don’t have memories attached to them.
Or do I?
I picked up that Little Mermaid lunchbox at a rummage sale up the road for 33 cents. Yes, I could probably sell it for a few dollars, like maybe six or seven, but the picture is coming off the front and there’s some stress marks on the inside. Brand new ones are only selling for around $10.00. It’s not worth my time or the space it takes up.
So why isn’t it gone already?
It’s in a box to get dropped off tomorrow but every time I look at it, I remember that The Little Mermaid was the very first movie that I took my oldest daughter to see at a theater.
I just haven’t been in a rush to get rid of the good memory that attached itself.
The Masters of The Universe puzzle is from about the same time period. The picture on the box screams NOSTALGIA. I love nostalgia. The 3-D puzzles are a little newer. My youngest daughter picked that one up recently. Both of these should be super easy to let go.
But again, it’s the good memory.
Puzzles are a tough one because we tend to spend hours working on them with family members and it’s FUN!! Lots of great conversations have been had over a good puzzle. So many memories attached to them and they quickly become sentimental clutter.
I will load these things in the car tomorrow to be donated and the whole time, I will be reminding myself that there’s new memories waiting to be made, for me in my own life and for whoever picks these up next.
Next time you’re struggling to let something go, spend a few minutes enjoying the memory it brings, but then let it go so someone else can experience it too. With the freed up space, create new wonderful memories that will carry you forward.
I haven’t Sold yet on ebay but am considering it. What’s your ebay name? I will add you to my favorite sellers.
Hi! My seller ID is jentur. If you ever have any questions, let me know! I’ve been selling a long time.
very wise. I have many items like this that I keep, but as you say cherishing those memories and then letting them go & letting others to experience the same happy feelings sounds like the best approach
