I’m starting on decluttering the mountain of stuff that’s occupying my dining room. Â There’s no table or anything in there right now. Â It’s just stuff. Â I put it all in there so I could get it out of my living room. We’re putting the rest of the new flooring in soon.
With this room, I’m starting very small because it’s an overwhelming place with so much stuff that it makes my head feel like it’s going to explode.
I’m starting with two bucketfuls of stuff hoping to get it down to one bucket by tonight.

First, I dump it all out onto the floor:

How do you even begin with a pile like this? Â It’s such an odd mix of things but I can see right away that some of it can go. Â They might want it if they see it but right now, it’s forgotten about which makes it easier for me to let it go. Â That’s a hard thing to do for a hoarder, wanted item or not.
Here’s a few things that I found in the buckets. Â
I got rid of the red View Master and the 4 moonlights. Â The moonlights were neat but I’ve never actually put batteries in them and used them. Â Good reason to get rid of them. Â
I can’t part with the Tupperware spice shakers or the wooden puzzles. Â Maybe I should get rid of a puzzle or two. Â I’m pretty sure that my kids will have kids someday but I think I’m hanging onto memories of my childhood. Now I’m using the future grandkids as an excuse. Â I’ll have to think about these a little more.
Have you ever tried to get rid of those Tupperware spice shakers? It’s really hard because they come in handy for so many things.
So far, the get rid of bucket is over half full and the mountain of stuff is getting smaller. Â Yay! Â The goal is to go through it all in the next 2 weeks. Then I’ll decide what to sell and what to donate!
For the toys- the wooden puzzle would be a good keep, for the grands. Because they are sturdy, and good for their development.
The rest of the stuff? Good riddance!
Hahaha! I just packed the puzzles into a bucket about an hour ago. They had ended up in the storage room and have survived another round of decluttering…lol
Great minds think alike! 😉
I love your decluttering activities; so inspiring. I have some stuff that I have been meaning to get rid of for some time; I guess today is the day 🙂 thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
It takes time. What helps me when I’m trying to get rid of stuff is (1) I remind myself that someday I will die and I cannot take anything with me and (2) I ask myself whether it is getting a good use right now or if someone else might be able to use it more if I donate it. Of course, don’t get rid of stuff you’ll need in the next 12 months but if you don’t see yourself really using/loving/enjoying it again, definitely pass it on to someone who might like it!
Thinking about someone else using something more than I will is a great help! I’ve been able to get rid of a lot more when I think about it that way.
