Trying to Get Back to Normal Too Quickly

Too many people decided that they wanted to go back to normal all at once and they did. For those of us who would’ve done it in a little safer way, it’s nerve-wracking. I usually like a little bit of controlled chaos but there’s been nothing controlled about this. As far as I’m concerned, the last 5 months have been one giant bumble.

I really did have a little more faith in my country that we would do this right. Even in my own state and county I expected more. But it didn’t happen. Even my level headed friends went full out looney-toons.

The medical facilities that I normally speak highly of let me down too. I was one of the first to walk into my regular clinic with a cough months ago and I’d give their response a D at best. I was disappointed. I know they’ve improved a little bit because they took my temp at the door the last time I went to pick up a prescription.

One person does get an A though. It’s our director at work. He had spent months last year making sure that we all had laptops and were able to work remotely. It had nothing to do with the pandemic. Our department was having a hard time keeping employees so it was something he could offer us – a chance to work from home one day a week. It was a perk that we were all thrilled to get. And boy oh boy did that turn out to be a blessing a million times bigger than we would realize! With only a half day notice, we were all working at home by the next day. There’s still departments working at the building now because they weren’t ready.

This has all happened so fast and I’m scared that all of this quick reopening is going to lead to disaster. The governor pretty much threw up his hands and said that he tried to help but there’s nothing else he can do. People here just decided it’s a hoax, it’s the flu, and the economy is more important. Like I said, they, the citizens, could be doing things to make it more a little safer but people are seriously just acting like it doesn’t exist at all.

The virus apparently left when the Supreme Court said that the safer at home order was unconstitutional. No social distancing, no wipes, no hand sanitizer, no masks, no gloves, no nothing. Just go about your normal business and expect that you might be a casualty because the economy is more important. And yes, I’ve heard many people say that. I think it’s a horrible thing to say.

  • Kiddo #2 is a doctor. She said when she drove by Griffith Park today, so many people were out on the lawn without masks and definitely not six feet apart from other groups or within their groups. She said she had an a sudden rush of anxiety. And this is in a very liberal area of Los Angeles! I can only imagine what it is like in other areas of the country.

  • They are all, about to get a wake up call I fear. I have a feeling that in about 2 weeks, this whole thing will be back with a vengeance. I really hope I’m wrong.

    • I keep thinking the same thing. Also hoping that I’m wrong. Praying that maybe the weather will help but knowing that it hasn’t in other places.

    • I’m in Wisconsin and my county has opened just about everything. Final openings this weekend – even bars and restaurants. They’ve said that stores should follow precautions but that’s just not reality when the people all think it’s nothing. Most of my friends think it’s like the flu and you don’t get it bad unless you’re over 65. They all balk at the idea of this being anything serious. At the stores, maybe half the people are wearing masks. Schools are about the only thing left that’s still undecided. Most summer events have all been cancelled but if the people had their way, they’d all go to them. It’s ridiculous.
