Does Keeping Beanie Babies Make Me A Horrible Person?

I have lots of Beanie Babies and they're so hard to get rid of.

Beanie Babies have become somewhat of a joke.

They were popular in the 90’s and everyone had them. It seemed that way anyways.

They’re adorable but that’s not what made them so popular, at least not in my house. It was the way that they were released that made collecting them so much fun.

My kiddos were the prime Beanie Babies age and they loved the hunt for them. Plus, they were fairly inexpensive which made finding them a fun family adventure.

Ty only released certain ones at certain times to certain places. Even stores in the same city would get different ones at different times. So we were constantly driving all over to find the ones we were missing.

It was a treasure hunt and it was so much fun!

We didn’t just stay in our city either. We would drive up to an hour if some random store got one that we needed.

That’s why it’s so hard for me to get rid of them. It’s the memories that are tightly attached. Okay, the cuteness does have a lot to do with it too!

These days, it seems like people think you’re silly if you keep them because they really aren’t worth any money. I keep hearing that a few might actually be worth something but finding a buyer could take a very long time.

There’s approximately 320,000 of them listed on eBay right now. Thousands and thousands of them, *like this Inch the Inch Worm, are priced at $0.99 and most of the time don’t sell the first time listed.

Bags of Beanie Babies Everywhere!

While trying to dig my way through my living room this weekend, I came across a huge bag of them. The bag was full of both the normal size ones and the baby ones. There were probably over 100 of them in the bag.

I kept telling myself that I had to get rid of them because I have a lot more around this house but I couldn’t do it. I told myself, how about just getting rid of three of them? It was hard but I did get rid of three of them. But that was it. I couldn’t get rid of more of them. After staring at them for ten minutes, I decided to put them in a bucket and move on.

A little while later, I came across a duplicate of the parrot one in a different bag and I got rid of it right away. No problem. So I ended up getting rid of four of them.

I’ll admit it though. That guilty feeling of keeping something that I know I should be getting rid of is so strong, especially since I really have no use for them. I kind of feel like a bad person keeping them.

But I’ll shake it off and hope that when I find more duplicates, they’ll be as easy to let go of as the parrot was!

  • Off course not, who can resist those little cutie pie’s anyways? I had my share of them as well, but have managed to whittle them down over the years. My last haul was given to a friends daughter and she loved them.
I do however have a confession…. I still have one that is never leaving… a cute long-armed frog 🐸 😆 who reminds me of all the fun I had hunting these down.

so I say… why not just get rid of the duplicates and the ones you don’t really like, (or have way too many similars) and enjoy the rest for everything they are worth 😀 and maybe as years go by, you can manage to whittle them down to a few handfuls 😉 and keep them for the memory they bring. Remember you don’t need to keep them all to keep the memories…

Mine… sits on a shelf in a cabinet, dangling his long feet…. and every time I open the cabinet (which I do often) he brings a smile to my face and lights up my day 🐸😀

    • Thanks so much for your comment! That’s so cool that you keep the frog in the cabinet. I have a few that carry more memories than some of the others but I never see them because they’re packed away in bins! Anyways, no problems getting rid of one more today. Yay! It was the turkey and I know that I have another one (or two, or three) around the house. Hopefully I’ll be able to continue getting rid of these duplicates as I find them.:)

    • That’s a good idea! I wonder if the parenting place I used to volunteer is open again yet? They had a big prize box that the kids could pick from after their groups if they were good.
