Don’t Be Afraid To Start Over By Taking Everything Out

Every time I do something drastic, like taking everything out of the house or a room, I wonder why I didn’t do it a long time ago.

While the weather was beautiful, we worked on taking everything out of the backyard. I didn’t think it looked too bad before, but with almost everything out now, it looks even better! Removing a few things makes a world of difference.

I’m not sure why I’ve never done this before. Taking everything out and starting over has done wonders here. It’s something that I will be doing regularly now, even if it’s just one room at a time in the future.

If your house is full with layers upon layers of stuff, don’t be afraid to empty it out and start over. It takes some planning before you start, such as renting a storage unit, but once you have someplace to go with everything, don’t worry about sorting, just get everything out.

When you think everything is out, do it again. You’ll be surprise at all the things you don’t see the first time.

For us, the whole house was layer upon layer of stuff, each layer being a different year. You could tell each time that I had done a good decluttering in an area because there was a solid foundation at the bottom from that year.

Those layers were nearly impossible to break down. They were tightly woven together by the years and ripping them apart was hard.

Once they were out though, the things that we’ve always loved about this house started shining through again.

Taking everything out can reveal any damage.

You might not realize it but all that stuff really does cause a lot of unseen damage to your house . Having everything out can help you see what needs to be repaired and gives you an opportunity to do that without having to fight through mounds of stuff to get to it. It’s so much easier doing it in a clutter free area.

Even if there’s not much damage, there’s a good chance that there’s some updating that needs to be done if everything has been buried for awhile. Even a coat of paint can freshen up the house. Don’t put these things off.

While everything is out, you can also get a lot of cleaning done. A lot of times you won’t even see it but dust is collecting underneath everything.

The other reason for emptying everything out is that it gives you an idea of how much you really have. We get so used to all of our stuff that it becomes invisible. Things end up everywhere except for where they belong.

The Most Important Reason for Doing This

Enjoying friends and family unexpectedly got even more important today. We had a very good friend pass away from cancer yesterday. It was a huge wake up call that we need to be able to spend more time with the people we love while we can.

A cluttered house isolates us and makes it hard to do that. Don’t let stuff be a reason for not having people over.

You can do something about it!

  • Oh Jen, my condolences on the lost of your friend.
We are preparing to move. So we rented a storage, and are loading out everything we r not actively using. I can’t wait! I already donated the dresser that was in my room, before I moved in. And my bedside stand, since DD1 has one she refuses to get rid of! So, mine went without even a qualm. I’m determined to have some space!!

    • It’s so nice to just get it all out of the house!! And congrats on your upcoming move! I hope it goes great! 😊
