Your Heavy Clothes Can Cause Massive Home Damage

Do you ever think about how heavy clothes are?

During the move process, it was discovered that the outside wall of my bedroom was kind of collapsing.

The realtor made a comment that it was because of my dresser and all my clothes! I wasn’t quite sure how to take that.

Was he saying that my clothes are huge and heavy or that I’m a hoarder with way too many or both?

Then he pointed out that the place where the wall was caving in was right where my dresser was.

Heavy clothes do heavy damage!

Ok, so heavy clothes can do some heavy damage. Apparently they can do about $35,000 of damage. That’s what a comparable repair was going to cost another home owner and my realtor had the quote to prove it.

I still wasn’t quite convinced that clothes could do that until I started packing and boy were they heavy!

Jeans, big heavy winter coats, leather jackets, and t-shirts are the worst. The space where I kept all these clothes was pretty small so it was a large concentration of heavy material. Once I started putting it all in bags, I realized just how heavy that stuff is.

Clothes should be at the top of the decluttering list if you’re planning on moving any time soon. They are heavy!

Start with jeans and then go through coats getting rid of any that no longer fit or that you never wear.

Your body changes as you age so what fit really nicely five years ago might look really awkward now, if you can even get back in them.

You don’t need to keep 30 pairs of jeans. Pick a number and get rid of the rest. If you can live with 20 pairs, get rid of 10 and so on. Don’t stop until you finish!

And remember, 30 pairs of jeans are really heavy! Every pair you get rid of is literally weight out of your life. You’ll feel lighter once they’re gone.

Once you’re done with the jeans and coats, move on until you feel lighter stepping into the room where you keep them. You’ll definitely notice a big difference.

If you're planning on moving, getting rid of heavy clothes beforehand makes things much easier.

  • I would never have thought it was the heavy dresser. I know shelves can have issues so it makes sense. Hopefully it didn’t affect your price!

  • Whoa!! That’s crazy!! Hope your repair is not that expensive!!
I’m not a big fashionista. I only own maybe 2 prs of jeans. Lately I’ve discovered the wonderful world of leggings!! No more muffin top!! Or tight pants!! Wooo hoo!
And I only own 1 pair of shoes at the time. Obviously I live in FL!! Couldn’t do that in the winter!! lol All I need to do is add socks to my sandals, and away I go!
I even wear the sandals to church. If anyone gets offended, then they need to check themselves!! Jesus wore sandals to synagogue! 😉
