Let’s Talk Kitchen Decluttering When There Isn’t Much Clutter

Kitchen cabinet with only the essential items in it.

Did you ever think you’d hear me say that there isn’t much clutter in my kitchen? Is kitchen decluttering possible when there isn’t much clutter?

And it’s not completely empty. I kept the things that I thought we used the most and so far, so good.

There’s only been three things that we’re missing. They are salt, cinnamon, and a certain pair of tongs. All of which we can live without for a little while.

How do you keep a kitchen looking this way though? After a few weeks, will I still be able to say that there isn’t much clutter?

I went for a search on Pinterest to get some tips on kitchen decluttering. There were a million articles on how to get rid of 20 things in your house and be clutter free! Yea right. There’s no way that getting rid of 20 things is going to make any kind of a difference in a normal house, let alone a cluttered one.

After more searching, I found an article that told of 130 things to get rid of when you’re decluttering. I was still very skeptical but decided to see what things made the list.

After some interesting facts about clutter, the list of things starts in the kitchen. Perfect! That’s exactly what’s on my mind.

There’s 26 kitchen items listed. I didn’t think that seemed like very many but once I started reading, I decided the list was pretty good and even though it was only 26 things, it could easily turn into so many more!

The list starts with unused eating utensils. I seriously thought that we were the only family on the planet who had nearly 100 spoons. She’s totally right. How many do we actually need for our family? Even if I keep five per person, there would still be a ton to get rid of!

Ok, we’re off to a really good start with this list.

One of the next things down the list was cookware with scratched Teflon. I really like this one because I know it’s bad for your health but sometimes I have a hard time prying favorite pots and pans out of other family members’ hands.

Kitchen gadgets is another good one. I think I have about 5 pizza cutters but how many am I ever going to use at once? Most of them are those round plastic ones. I’ll keep the nice metal ones!

Wow the numbers in my head are adding up already! I don’t think there’s anything on that list that I don’t have a lot of. Last summer when my son and I decluttered the kitchen, I thought we did a great job. We can do much better!

When it’s time to fill the cabinets again, organization will be the top priority but organizing is so much easier when there isn’t much clutter. Let’s start with the kitchen decluttering and do it right this time!

  • I think decluttering is a longer process than most realize – you start by getting rid of the obvious and gradually work through to getting rid of the extra spoons!

    • I agree! I see all these articles with the title “Decluttering your whole house in 7 days” and I’m just dumbfounded… 7 days? It took me a lot longer than 7 days to get everything out and I wasn’t even sorting!! Lol!!

  • This is excellent. My husband is the cook and grocery shopper. When he has been shopping we end up with enough food to feed a lot of people. Eventually we eat through it all. But he admits to having food anxiety during this Pandemic. I let it go as there are worse things he could have. Here we are in yet another lockdown so it is endless and stressful.

    • Oh no…Another lock down? That’s awful! I hope it goes quick! They just fully opened everything here. Masks are even optional. I think it’s too soon but we’ll see what happens. Is the variant strain spreading there?
