Making Plans To Get to the Furnace

I’ve been thinking about how we’re going to get the area around my mom’s friend’s furnace cleaned out enough for the repair people to get in. They need a two foot wide path to the furnace and five feet all the way around. They were there today and said they also need a path to the electrical panel.

Let’s start at the top of the stairs. There’s a gate at the top. There’s bags and wall hangings in front of it and clothes on top of it. You have to move those before you even get to the stairs. Once you get through the gate, you have to take a step down, then move the bags on the next step up behind you so you can take another step down. It’s only that way for about the first five steps and then you have the left side of each step to continue down. The right side of the stairs are covered about 2 or 3 feet high and a foot wide all the way down. Whew. It takes a lot of effort to get down there.

Once down, there’s a long thin pathway to the furnace. At least it’s a straight path. On the left, there’s about a 5 foot wall of Goodwill bags stacked up. They aren’t even open. She shops every day just so she doesn’t have to be at home.

On the right, probably less than two feet to the right, there’s a long row of clothes hanging up. I bet there’s over 100 shirts there and who knows how many pairs of pants. These go all the way to about three feet from the furnace.

My plan is get the furnace mission done in the next two weeks. We’re going over there for sure on Saturday and maybe Sunday. To me, the biggest challenge is getting her out of the way. She moves very slowly and it’s hard to move and get things done when we have to constantly shuffle in and out so we can change order since you can only get in by single file. The solution to this, I hope, is to have her sit outside with my mom and go through the bags on the stairs. My mom is really good at that!

With them outside, I’m planning on doing the area that’s right around the furnace. That’s the goal for the day. If it happens to go better than planned, then I will start on the pathway. I was a little encouraged today when my mom told her that she might need to get rid of a few feet of clothing hanging on that long pole and she said okay! She actually said that we could take some of them to Goodwill. Yay!!

  • Wow, you really have your work cut out for you! Brilliant to have her sit outside with your Mom. Since she has company, hopefully she will be able to let go of a lot! You and your Mom have such huge hearts!! Thank you for being so loving, and helpful!!

    • Thank you! You’re so sweet!! I’m getting a little worried about tomorrow but saying a few little prayers will help I’m sure! We’re heading over early in the morning.
