No End to the Mountains of Stuff

I’ve been talking about the time crunch I’ve been having the last few months but things have not gotten better.  I’m still stuck in the midst of a major time crunch and the mountains in my living room are growing.  I haven’t had mountains in over a year but they’re slowly taking root and regaining ground.

County fair weekThe county fair was in July and that’s what put us over the edge.  There’s horse stuff everywhere.  A lot of it was in the trailer but I had to clean that out so I could take it in for some maintenance before fair.  When we go to the fair, we keep most of our tack in the truck so it doesn’t get stolen and most of that is in the house now.  It needs to get cleaned before the state show.  Then I decided that I wanted to finally tackle the front porch so I had to bring everything that was out there in.  All together, that created about 3 mountains of stuff.

After the fair, we’ve had more horse shows, a family reunion, state fair and camp.  Plus, the twins were struggling to get everything ready for college.  My son pulled it off and he’ll be heading out in a few weeks but my daughter wasn’t able to get a loan.  I don’t think that’s such a bad thing but it breaks my heart seeing her so upset.  She was so ready to start college and a year seems like forever to her.  I think the time will go fast though because she has the state horse show and then her horse bowl team gets to go to Kentucky in November.  It’s hard to tell her that though when she’s so ready for that next exciting chapter of her life.

Work has been ridiculously stressful too.  It’s hard to come home after a mentally exhausting day and then try to think about decluttering.  I’ve been trying to take note of what’s working and what’s not.  Some of my storage solutions have been great but a few haven’t helped much at all.  Once in awhile, I have to tell myself to spend 10 minutes cleaning something up.  Sure enough, even 10 minutes helps with the focus.

The Mountains

Back to the mountains. What am I going to do about them?  Nothing right now.  I’m going to tackle that front porch.  I’ve been spending a few minutes everyday thinking about it.  I need to picture it in my head and so far nothing has sparked my interest.  I’ve been searching Pinterest looking for ideas.  I’m also going through horse stuff in the living room making piles of stuff to get rid of.  Luckily, that pile is pretty big.  Unfortunately, the best place for me to sell it is at the Midwest Horse Fair in April.  I hate to keep it that long but it really is the best place to sell it.

One of the things that I’m thinking of making is shelves made out of drawers.  That’s something that has come up a lot in my search.  It looks functional and like it might be easy to put horse stuff in.  Also, there’s been a lot of people throwing away dressers in my neighborhood lately so it would be fairly inexpensive to make. I’ll keep thinking about that one.  I’ve also decided that I can’t think too much about what to keep and get rid of.  If I don’t love it, it’s going.  Yes, there’s a few things I have to keep on the porch like salt for the sidewalk in winter but most of it is just stuff that doesn’t have any place else to go.

I hope everyone is doing well!

  • Hello! Thank you so much for sharing! I don’t use my living room for mountains but I do understand and can relate because my dining room has several mountains as well. Back to school stuff, Cub Scout stuff, work stuff, all kinds of stuff! I’ve recently started video taping my progress on my house, I tell myself to just do 5 minutes a day. Some days I get more done than 5 minutes worth, other days, 5 minutes is more than enough. But after a week or so, I have over a half hour of video tape of me cleaning up/organizing/standing around / scratching my butt whatever. lol
No, I don’t spend a half hour and watch it, but I do upload them all to YouTube as a private video and then change the setting to time-lapse at 6x the speed – oh my gosh, now **THAT** is fun to watch. It reduces it down to just a few minutes. It shows my progress, it goes so fast and it’s somewhat gratifying. Just thought I’d share with you my recently discovered secret to gain momentum. I know how hard it is! I love reading your posts. Thanks again and good luck at tackling your 1st mountain!

    • It’s so funny that you said that about the time lapse video because my daughter said the same thing to me two days ago!! I think that means I should try it!! I’ll give it a try this weekend 🙂

    • LOL..you’re right! It does! I think it will go better this year. We decided that if we left anything here at home and didn’t miss it, then we don’t need it 🙂
