The Living Room Shelves

It’s hard to admit how bad things have become in my living room. It was so beautiful when I remodeled it a few years ago and now it’s buried again. Buried under mounds of stuff.

The “stuff” mostly isn’t stuff I love or need. A lot of it is stuff to sell and it’s been selling great during this pandemic but that doesn’t make it anymore okay. It’s still stuff taking up way too much space. Like the unwelcome guest who won’t leave, it just sits there disrupting the peace.

Since storage is a problem in my house, we had the great idea to put shelves up in the living room. It’s a whole entire wall of shelves. It was so great to put things on them and get the stuff out of the way that I just kept cramming more and more in. They’re a disaster now. It just looks like one big mess. The couch in front of the shelves is overflowing with stuff too which makes it even worse.

The Weekend Plan

So here’s the plan for the weekend. Declutter the shelves. I’ve already pulled out eight things that can go and I haven’t really started yet. Once I get it thinned out enough, then I’m going to re-organize it. Once that’s done, I’m hoping that I’ll have a small section available where I can put stuff after it’s listed. I have a real problem finding things once they’ve sold so this way I’ll be able to see things much better and I can get it off the couch.

There’s no way that I can organize this much stuff though so a lot has to go. Even though I have a lot of cool stuff to sell, I think that if I can’t get more than a couple bucks for it, I’m just going to donate it. At this point, that will be the best thing to do. It’s time to regroup. I’ll try to take some pics tomorrow but tonight I’m too embarrassed!

the first 8 things to get decluttered - 2 books, lunch bag, pants, jell-o mold, 2 glasses and a phone card
Here’s the first 8 things to be decluttered off the shelves. The Tupperware lunch bag will probably end up in the sell pile but the rest can go. I’m having a hard time letting go of the Jell-o mold though! I love those Halloween shapes.

  • When we started our decluttering journey, we didn’t want to keep the stuff around and deal with selling and shipping it. Everything was donated. Glad to hear you are rethinking selling some of it. Your peace of mind is important too!

    • I have one really big goal in mind right now so I need to raise every penny I can 😊. Hopefully I’ll be able to share it sometime in the next year! Just trying to balance what’s worth selling and what’s a waste of time.
