Trying to Keep Up with 7000 Strawberry Plants

When we did the walkthrough before the closing on this house, we discovered a lot of strawberry plants.

Shortly after we moved in, we found out that the farmers that use the land next door had been renting the land here. They had planted 7,000 strawberry plants!

We picked a lot of strawberries last year! After the season was over, I had no idea that I was supposed to cut all the weeds down. So they went to seed.

This year, there’s tons of strawberries again plus a ton of weeds.

A Weed For Every Strawberry!

I’m talking weeds on top of weeds. I’ve never seen so many weeds. The size of them is something else too! Three foot tall dandelions with leaves that have to be almost two feet long.

While I was weeding tonight, I would pull a big weed out and notice that the weeds had crowded the strawberry plants out. We can’t have that!

I’m still trying to finish planting my tomato plants so thankfully, a few of the kids have been picking strawberries for me. We’ll be picking every day for the next few weeks.

Once the strawberries have been picked, I have to hurry to get them in freezer bags. I don’t need to hurry too much but if I don’t get as many done as possible every night, I’ll never keep up.

If I don’t keep up, I’ll have mushie strawberries that I won’t want to do anything with. Then, the mushie strawberries will get moldy and end up in the garbage.

I’m trying to do some of the weeding while I’m picking. Since there’s so many weeds, and so many are thistles, it’s taking a very long time. I doubt that I’ll even make a dent before the season comes to an end.

After last year, it sounds like keeping them from going to seed is the most important thing right now. I might still have a lot next year, but hopefully there won’t be too many more!!
