I feel like I failed today. That’s usually how it goes. Right when you think things are getting better, they take a turn for the worse. Today was one of those days. It was so incredibly disappointing.
Hopeless was the mood when we left. We were only able to get her to let go of three very small bags of stuff. My mom and I got rid of a lot of garbage but not all with her blessing. She was even having a problem getting rid of papers today and they were from 2014. So if we found actual garbage, we threw it away.
There’s no concept of what a kitchen, or a hallway, or a dining room is for. They are all just spaces to throw the “collectibles” she picks up at Goodwill every day. I was hoping to help her enough to be able to get some professional help in there but I don’t even think that’s possible.
Today was the kind of day that I want to say I’m done. If she’s not willing to let go of a few things, then why am I there? Just to move her stuff around her house? That’s what it feels like and I don’t have time for that. My house needs a lot of work too. I’m more than happy to help her if she’s willing to work with us but that’s not what’s happening.
I need a few more hours, or days, to just let it all sink in before I decide what to do next. My brain needs time to recuperate from today.
I am still in awe that you devoted so much time and energy to this project for someone. I can understand your frustration. Maybe arranging for help would be your best use of time. Does your community have a psychologist who would be willing to help?
Our Catholic Social Services has a hoarder division that my mom suggested to her and even gave her the number. She doesn’t quite understand that she has a problem yet so she’s still refusing to call. I’m hoping that maybe if we can get her in a little better situation, she won’t be so embarrassed to call.
