What People Think When You Say You Have a Mess

Do you ever wonder what people think when you say you have a mess?

Do they think there’s a few things out of place? Or a few dishes in the sink?

If you told them that cleaning a single room could take weeks, or months, would they believe you?

Now turn the question around. What do you think when one of your friends say that they have a mess?

Do you assume that they just have a few things out of place? Or a few dishes in the sink?

What’s the definition of a mess anyways?

How can you stress it enough that when you say you have a mess, you really mean a mess and not just a few things out of place?

Could non-clutter bugs ever understand?

I’ve been pondering these questions a lot lately. I told the realtor that my house wasn’t ready to be put up for sale because it was a mess. Other family members told him it was a mess. We all stressed what a mess it was.

Every time someone said it, his reply was that it would all be okay. It wouldn’t be a problem.

We emphasized over and over how bad it really was.

It’ll all be okay. It won’t be a problem.

But it’s really bad. Every room of the house is full. Completely full.

It’ll all be okay. It won’t be a problem.

But we’ve lived here 23 years and I’m not sure that we’ve gotten rid of anything at all.

It’ll all be okay. It won’t be a problem.

I’ve been working on this room for 3 days straight and there’s barely a dent. I can’t do it. There’s too much stuff.

It’ll all be okay. It won’t be a problem.

Do we really need to have this place on the market in the next 5 days? Do you see how much stuff is still here? Have you been in the basement yet? Oh what was that? You can’t get to the other half of the basement because there’s so much stuff?

Oh, um, well, um, maybe we should’ve waited until this was finished first. This might be a problem.

Yea, maybe. What did you think I meant when I said that we have a mess?!?!?

I’ve come to the conclusion that what people think when you say you have a mess totally depends on what their definition of a mess is to them.

What people think when you say you have a mess depends on what they think is a mess..

  • Exactly!! I think they have the same level 3 hoard I have, with hazmat suits required in the kitchen. Some of my friends, in the past, said their house was a mess. I went over, and basically they had forgotten to put out the guest towels, and their magazines on the coffee table were not 100% aligned. I was very angry!! I guess I felt tricked?? And NEVER let them come in MY house for shame!!

    • Yes!! That’s what I’m talking about! It gets me mad too when someone says they can’t do something fun because they have to get some cleaning done when I know darn well that their house is basically spotless. Although I guess that’s how they keep it spotless 😊 lol!
