Letting Go So You Can DO More

Letting go of things is so hard sometimes.

The mound of things piling up in my hallway are things that I was thinking of selling in a rummage sale. It’s very different things than what I sell on eBay.

But the other day, I was thinking about all the work that a rummage sale entails. It’s A LOT of work.

There were times that I would spend weeks getting ready to have a rummage sale, took a few days off of work, and then sat outside all day and only made $30.00. Then I would still have to figure out what to do with the leftovers at the end of the day.

I mean, $30.00 was definitely better than nothing, and in those days, that was a lot of money for me. But, was it really worth it?

Some people are great at doing rummage sales and they make hundreds or thousands of dollars. I’m just not of them.

As I was thinking about it the other day, a quote that I’ve heard many times the last few years popped into my head. I believe it goes back to The One Thing book, or some derivative of it.

“By saying yes to one thing, you’re saying no to something else”

So by saying yes to having a rummage sale, what would I be saying no to?

When you’re new to this kind of thinking like I am, it’s a little tricky at first. It took a while for me to figure it out. What exactly would I be saying no to?

Finally, I was realizing what things I wouldn’t have time for if I went that route.

Two things were enough to make me decide not to have this rummage sale at the new house.

I want to work on a garden this year and I want to spend more time riding my horse.

Letting go will free up a little time that I can use.

Both of those things require a good amount of time and if I spend hours and weeks sorting, organizing, setting up, and then sitting there having a rummage sale, it’s just that much less time that I’ll have for the things that I really want to do this year.

The year will be over and I’ll wonder why I didn’t do more gardening or riding. It all goes back to the self inflicted time crunch. I didn’t realize how much time I’ve been spending doing things that I don’t really enjoy doing and that I don’t need to be doing.

Or how much time I’ve been spending tending to STUFF. Very unimportant STUFF nonetheless.

So now I will be tending to this stuff once more as I box and bag it all up to go somewhere. I’m not sure where yet but I’ll figure that out when it’s ready to go. I’m looking forward to getting it out of the house though and not spending all that time getting it ready for a rummage sale.

It’s hard of course. There’s a lot there and a lot of nice stuff and I could really use a little extra money. But, I’ll just keep reminding myself that letting go of it without the hassle of a rummage sale will free up time for the things I love to do.

After all, there’s a lot to do in 2022!!

  • Definitely more “important” things to do than a rummage sale! That was one of the things we said no to at the beginning of our decluttering journey. We don’t want to spend the time on it to make pennies per hour.
