Day 19 Letting Go of a Few Books

A Few Books and Small things

All these little things are adding up quickly.  Maybe that’s why I keep them around so long.  They’re small and they don’t seem to take up too much space but I still have to pick them up.  I feel like getting rid of them won’t make much of a difference but there’s so many!  It has to be making a difference.

I have 3 books here.  I’ve been picking up books lately because they look interesting but as I’ve said before, I’m a very slow reader.  One book could take me months to read.  Since I haven’t touched any of these books, well, ever, I think it’s time to let them go to someone else.  I have plenty here that I really do want to read and I have to stay realistic about how long it will be before getting through them.

I thought about keeping the knee high nylons but then I remembered that 10 year old elastic usually disintegrates.  There’s more hair ties, little kid scissors, bead necklace, some old ibuprofen and other small random things.  I’m glad to see this all go.  I don’t want to pick any of it up ever again.

Day 13 Ten Year Old Clutter

18 small things to get rid of

Ten Year Old Clutter

I’m working on getting rid of 18 things for 113 days before the end of the year.  Things have been slow but I’m determined to make the goal before the end of the year.  I’m starting with 18 things for day 13.  I grabbed a bucket in the basement to go through and before I knew it, I had a huge pile.  Everything in the bucket was dated 2007.  This time, instead of just grabbing a pile of receipts and small papers and counting it as one day, I actually wanted to count every little piece.

Counting each piece this time was important to me because these things, even as small as they are, have been taking up space in my basement for 10 years!! What’s even worse is that this stuff was all the junk that was in one of my cars when I cleaned it out.  Half of it was garbage.

My favorite thing in this group is the card with 5 earrings.  They’re all different!  What happened to the other ones?

Day 11 More Random Pieces of Paper

I bet you were thinking that I had given up after Day 8 of my self imposed challenge that I keep changing. I’m still at it!  I’ve just been busy but had a little time today to get back at it.

Here’s my 18 for today. More pieces of paper to fill up my recycle bin. Better for them to be there than on the stairway where I found them stuffed in a bag.

Day 8 Mounds of Receipts

Receipts everywhere!  That’s what started this round of decluttering. I had receipts in my purse, in my car, and on my end table.  They kept falling out all over the place.  Time to go through them and purge!

I found a few other things besides the receipts:

  • Cat harness
  • Glove
  • Sock
  • Comb
  • 3 Horse project packet
  • Half eaten bag of BBQ chips
  • Flashlight
  • 3 packs of hamburger buns
  • Bag of plastic bags
  • Bag of way more than 5 receipts lol

Day 8 puts me at 144 things gotten rid of in July that I never have to pick up again!

I think this puts my Grand Total at 2,519 things that I never have to pick up again. Yay!  I finally made it over 2,500!!!

Not Much Left on The Free Table

When I pulled up by the free table, I was a little disappointed at how much was still left.  I was also surprised that some of the things that I thought would go right away were still there.  All of the leftovers fit inside that box on the right.  I guess that’s pretty good since it took me 2 car loads to get it there.   Lots of clothes were taken which is good.  I’m glad for that.  One of the things that I was surprised wasn’t gone was the pancake shaker maker.  Those things are or were like $15.00.  I think you can get cheap knock offs now.

Day 7 of the July Challenge

So many reasons to keep up at this pace.  I even have a new slogan:  18 things a day until 2018.  Even though it technically qualifies as a SMART goal, I don’t know if it really is.  It’s a little hard to keep up.  I can do my best though and everyone in my house will be better off for it whether I make it or not!

I even did the math.  If I can do it for 112.11 days out of the remaining 174 days of the year, I will have gotten rid of 2018 things.  And that will put me pretty close to 5,000 things in total.  Maybe I’ll make more than 112 days and actually reach the 5,000 goal.  Ok, enough day dreaming for now.

Here’s my 18 things for Day 7:

  • Shape-Ups shoes
  • Tupperware pitcher.  I like these pitchers but I have a bunch of them and I don’t need a bunch.
  • Fisher Price veterinarian clinic
  • Empty shoe box
  • Nail clipper kit
  • The Box Blockbuster movie
  • The Upside of Anger Blockbuster movie – I don’t know if the movies are actually in the cases.  I didn’t look.
  • Pink Peeps.  I won’t let the kids eat these so obviously they’re from someone else.  We do eat the yellow ones though.  And Peeps people, if you’re reading this, even people who eat candy look at the ingredients.
  • Toothpaste.  Out it goes, more bad ingredients.
  • A sock – yes, just one 🙂
  • Pillow
  • Half drank bottle of water.  You all know what I’m talking about.  I have, however, found many uses for these half empty bottles of water.  It works in my clothes iron.  I pour it into the cat dishes.  The plants don’t mind it either.
  • Cat snow pants.  Yes, you read that right.  Cat snow pants.  It snows here.
  • Western hat
  • Black clogs
  • Empty pill bottle
  • Empty jewelry gift box
  • And, last but not least.. are you ready for this?… Teen Compression Short & Cup.  New.  Still in the package.  This was actually part of a white elephant gift that I got last Christmas at work.  It’s been in the back of my truck for no reason ever since.

126 Things So Far in July

day 7 of the July Challenge

Pots and Pans Fill the Cupboards

When I was about 12 years old, I spent my summer babysitting for a little boy up the street.  We didn’t normally cook food but on one particular day, the mom gave me something to cook.  I had to ask the little boy where they kept the pots and pans.  At my house, we had about 10 different frying pans to choose from, a bunch of the quart size ones, and about 20 in between sizes.  There was no shortage of pots and pans.  Small ones and big ones.  Nice ones and well used ones.  I thought everyone had that many pots and pans.  It was normal to me.

He told me which cabinet they were in.  Cabinet?  Just one cabinet?  I opened it up and there was only one pan of each size.  I remember the day very vividly even though it was a long time ago.  It was strange to not have so many choices, almost confusing to me. I asked him where the rest were and he told me that was all they had.  Searching through the rest of the cabinets, I was panicking a little bit.  When I asked him why they didn’t have more, he asked why they needed more.  We cooked a lot more after that and it was nice to know that even though there were only a few pots and pans, it was enough.  We didn’t need anymore.

Pots and Pans Everywhere

I remembered this tonight as I looked around my kitchen at all the pots and pans everywhere.  Why do we have so many?  A lot of them even have teflon flaking off and they should be thrown away.  If we only had a couple, there would only be a couple to wash.  There wouldn’t be stacks of them.  I would be able to put them away instead having to leave them out because they don’t fit in a cabinet.

What about you?  Do you have lots of pots and pans?  Or just a few? I’m curious to know which is more common.
